If you have a loved who has dementia and is in hospital, please read on.

John’s Campaign is a national campaign that allows families and carers of those with dementia, learning disabilities, autism or other complex needs, to continue to give support in healthcare settings.

After being temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, this service means that a carer or family member is able to be present during general care, mealtimes, outside of visiting hours, and to be involved in decision making. Now it’s safe to do so, it’s being reintroduced and acknowledges the important role that families and carers play in supporting people who are living with these needs.

Cllr John Pritchard, lead member for adult social care, said: “The role that families and carers play in supporting people with complex needs is vital and I am pleased to see that this option is once again available.

“The anxiety and confusion that many patients feel in this situation can be overwhelming and having open visiting hours is hugely supportive.”

If you care for someone who has dementia, learning difficulties, autism or other complex needs and need to arrange access during a hospital stay, contact the ward or department at the hospital directly.
