Archwood Group in Chirk is a family owned, professionally run leading manufacturer of timber products with two trading brands, Richard Burbidge, a manufacturer and supplier of stair parts, decking accessories and decorative mouldings, and Atkinson and Kirby, a supplier of premium hardwood flooring.

Lead Member for Economy and Regeneration, Cllr Nigel Williams, along with the Business and Investment team at WCBC recently met with staff at the company which has sustainability at the top of their agenda.

During the visit Archwood demonstrated how they are leading the way in the field. By joining the United Nations Race To Zero campaign in 2021 the company has reduced their Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 66%. They’ve achieved this through the formation of an internal Environmental Action Group who have implemented business wide changes that have seen investments in renewable infrastructure, new machinery, recycling and IT systems.

Lee Burford (Director of Operations) and Lee Travis (Quality and Sustainability Manager) agreed the company has made great progress on their Net Zero journey but highlighted that there is still much more work to be done.

Archwood Group leading the way

“Like many UK manufacturing companies we have a global supply chain which indirectly generates carbon emissions. And we’re leading the way here having already assessed and verified our Scope 3 emissions. We’re now actively engaging with suppliers to communicate oursustainability goals, the reduction targets that we have in place for the supply chain and how we will support our suppliers on their own individual Net Zero journeys.”

Following the visit Nigel said, “It’s very encouraging to see a local, family run business with so much enthusiasm for developing more environmentally sustainable working practices and how they’re working with their suppliers to achieve the same objectives. I wish them well in their journey and will take a keen interest as they move forward.

“I’d like to thank them for their time in taking myself and colleagues around their business.”
