Throughout the year, celebrations for the 1876 Year of Wonder have been taking place around the city. There are plenty more to take part in before the year is out.
Our library teams across Wrexham are launching a new competition to continue the celebrations. To do this, they are going to need some help from our local budding artists.
The competition launches on Thursday October 1. Children are encouraged to take part and share their character creation ideas.
Inspiring systems
Did you know that in 1876 Melville Dewey created the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system?
The DDC is a numerical method used by libraries to organize books by their specific subjects and it’s used in thousands of libraries around the world.
Competition time
To celebrate the 150th year of the DDC, Wrexham libraries will be launching an art competition for children to design a mascot to represent the DDC.
Your character could be an animal, a robot, a superhero, a magical creature or anything you want it to be.
If you can conjure up the best character, you could see your idea come to life as the winning design will be used in our libraries throughout Wrexham.
Now is your chance to have your work seen by the countless number of people who visit their local library week in, week out.
How to enter
This competition is open to children aged 5 to 12 years old. The competition opens on October 1 and closes on October 31.
The lucky winners will be announced November 2026.
The three, easy steps to enter are:
- Collect your entry form from your local library
- Hand draw your character
- Return the completed form back to the library
Entries must be original artwork drawn by hand on the official entry form. Name, age, contact details and library card number must be filled out on the back of the drawing. Competition entries are limited to one per child.
