A Wrexham secondary school will have a new headteacher at the helm this autumn.

Simon Ellis, who is currently headteacher at The Maelor School in Penley, will join Ysgol Clywedog at the start of September.

Mr Ellis has been headteacher at The Maelor for the past 13 years and has a wealth of experience behind him

He said: “I’ll miss working in Penley, but leading one of Wrexham’s larger schools at the heart of our improving city is a rare and exciting opportunity.

“I’ve already met many of the pupils and staff over the past few weeks and I’ve been impressed with their enthusiasm and energy for the future.

“I’ve also had the opportunity to work with Deputy Headteacher Mrs Miranda Cookson to appoint some fabulous new staff ready for September.”

Long-term vision

Mr Ellis has been impressed with the ambition at Ysgol Clywedog, which currently has over 830 pupils.

He said: “The governing body and Wrexham Council have ambitious plans for the school, and they’ve really impressed me with their long-term vision.

“I look forward to meeting with parents and carers over the next few months as well as inviting year 5 and 6 parents to our open evening on Wednesday, September 18.”

Chair of the governing body Mrs Paula Wood commented: “Simon has an excellent track record of working in partnership with the Welsh Government, Estyn and Wrexham Council to generate strong educational outcomes over the past decade.

“We welcome his experience and I’m delighted that he’ll be joining us from September.

“Simon moved to the area almost 20 years ago as Deputy Headteacher of Rhosnesni High School, and he knows the Wrexham communities well and brings with him extensive successful headteacher experience.

“This is an exciting time for Ysgol Clywedog.”
