Following on from Carers Rights Day, we asked young carers in Wrexham about the support they receive from WCD young carers.
WCD Young Carers believe all young carers are amazing and remind them of this if they forget. Their bespoke support includes fortnightly respite clubs for different age groups, trips and activities in the school holidays, one-to-one support during tough times, advocacy as well as awareness raising in schools/colleges and the local community.

Young carer 1: I get loads of different support, so they’ve helped me emotionally through a tough last two years.
So I used to have one-to-ones to deal with what has happened but I also help out with volunteering so they’ve also gave me that passage way to helping me get to do what I want to do, because I want to do childcare anyway and I want to become a youth worker.
They’ve supported my decision and helped me throughout the whole thing.
Young carer 2: A lot of respite, it’s kind of like it’s changed over the years because when I was younger it was more of a ‘come to a group, do some colouring, have a chat with everyone’, but now it’s more of going on trips because I’d rather not sit and colour.
So we just got back from Denmark which was really fun, because I’m classed as a young adult carer now – just about.
It’s mostly just one-to-ones – I do stuff on a one-to-one basis with Lisa or Leanne because it’s a lot easier to talk to them on their own than it is to be like ‘oh guys, guess what happened’ in the middle of a group, because I don’t tend to enjoy groups much anymore.
Young carer 3: They mainly help by letting people know they are a young carer, but I just basically try to listen to them and do the best I can.
Young carer 4: They support me by giving me opportunities to meet new people – to look to other people who are experiencing what I’m going through.
They help us in the many ways that they can by giving us short breaks.
