Active travel scheme roadworks postponed

Work on an active travel scheme in Wrexham city centre has been put back to allow more time to appoint a contractor.

Roadworks were due to start on January 5 (2026), but the contractor originally awarded the work has withdrawn their bid.

As a result, Wrexham Council will now need to undertake a new procurement process.

The scheme will see an improved walking and cycling route constructed between the city centre’s pedestrianised area at Hope Street, near Waterstones, and Wrexham General railway station.

Councillor Terry Evans, Lead Member for Environment, said: “Work was originally set to start next month, but we’ll now need to undertake a fresh procurement exercise to find a contractor.

“It’s difficult to say how long this will take, but once we have a contractor in place we should have a clearer picture of when the work can begin.”

The scheme was originally part of a public consultation in 2023. Since then, changes have been made following feedback from the public as well as public bodies.

December 12 drop-in session postponed

A drop-in session was held in the city centre last week on December 2, where people could learn more about the scheme.

A further drop-in was due to be held on December 12, but this will now be postponed until a contractor is appointed and there’s more clarity around time scales.
