Businesses, charities and community organisations across Wrexham are being invited to take part in the North Wales Dementia Friendly Communities Scheme.
The scheme helps communities become more welcoming, inclusive and supportive for people living with dementia, as well as their families, friends and carers.
Becoming dementia friendly does not need to be complicated, small changes can make a big difference.
This could include staff taking part in dementia awareness training, improving signage, reviewing entrance and waiting areas, or making a yearly pledge to support people affected by dementia.
For example, some dark mats at entrances can be difficult for people living with dementia, as they may appear like holes or obstacles. Simple changes like this can help people feel safer and more confident when visiting local places.
Organisations taking part could gain recognition for their efforts, which might include:
- Dementia awareness training
- Clearer signage
- Dementia-friendly activities
- Small changes to buildings or services
- A yearly pledge to support people living with dementia
Councillor John Pritchard, Lead Member for Adult Social Care, Health and Wellbeing said “We want Wrexham to be a place where people living with dementia feel safe, supported and included. Local businesses, charities and organisations can play a huge part in that. Even small changes can have a really positive impact.”
Councillor Frank Hemmings, Dementia Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society said “People living with dementia should be able to remain active, connected and included in their local community. When businesses and organisations take the time to understand dementia, it helps create places where people feel safer, more confident and more supported. This scheme is a really positive step for Wrexham.”
The scheme is open to all shops, cafes, charities, community groups, venues, public services and local businesses across Wrexham.
