Wrexham Council is looking at measures to help protect birds at Stryt Las Park following reports of antisocial behaviour towards wildlife in the park.
Officers have visited the area following concerns about an injured swan. Although an injured bird could not be located during the most recent visit, we are aware of wider reports of antisocial behaviour towards birds at the site and consideration is being made for what further action can be taken.
All birds in Wales, are legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
It is an offence to intentionally harm or take a wild bird, except in circumstances permitted by law.
As part of this response, officers are exploring whether a camera could be installed overlooking the park.
Posters are also being prepared for display around the area, encouraging members of the public to report incidents of antisocial behaviour and providing details of organisations that can assist where there are concerns about an injured bird.
Members of the public who witness antisocial behaviour or deliberate harm towards wildlife are encouraged to report the incident to North Wales Police via 101.
Where an animal appears to be injured or distressed, people should seek advice from an appropriate animal welfare organisation rather than attempting to catch or handle the animal themselves.
Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment said, “We are concerned by the reports we have received about behaviour towards birds at Stryt Las Park.
Wildlife should be treated with respect, and deliberately harming or intimidating animals is completely unacceptable in our communities.
Our officers are looking at what practical measures we can put in place, including additional signage and the possibility of camera coverage.
We also encourage anyone who witnesses antisocial behaviour towards wildlife to report it so the appropriate authorities are aware and can take action.”
Work will continue with relevant partners and the local community to consider measures aimed at reducing antisocial behaviour and protecting wildlife in the area.
If you witness someone deliberately harming or targeting wildlife, or other antisocial behaviour involving the birds at Stryt Las Park, please report it.
North Wales Police – call 101 for non-emergency incidents. Incidents of anti-social behaviour can also be reported through the North Wales Police website.
RSPCA – If you find a swan or other wild animal that appears injured or in distressed, call 0300 123 8960 or report the concern through the RSPCA website. The RSPCA advises people not to attempt to handle or transport large, injured birds themselves.
RSPB – for advice about wild birds or concerns relating to wildlife crime, contact the RSPB Wildlife Team on 01767 693690 or contact them via email. Wildlife crime itself should still be reported to the police in the first instance. More advice is available on the RSPB website.
