April is designated as the Month of the Military Child
SHARE

Month of the Military Child is held every year in April. It is a time to highlights the important role service children play in the Armed Forces community and to applaud Armed Forces families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and the challenges they overcome.

The recent high-profile deployment of HMS Dragon, the Royal Navy ship associated to Wrexham is a timely reminder of the role armed forces personnel and their families play in keeping us all safe.

Armed forces champion, Cllr Beverly Parry Jones said: “The life of a military child often involves moving around, going to new schools and making new friends. “Through having a designated Month of the Military child we recognise and highlight their resilience as they take up roots and adapt to new areas and surroundings.”

Wrexham Mayor’s Cadet now appointed after the post was approved at full council last December

The Mayor’s Cadet scheme is a longstanding tradition and increasing in many local authorities across the UK, designed to recognise and involve young people in civic life.

The Mayor’s Cadet serves as an ambassador for youth in the community and supports the Mayor during public engagements.

The post will be in place for the start of the civic year May 2026 – May 2027 ahead of the appointment of Cllr Jeremy Kent to the position of Mayor, and then on an annual basis.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jeremy Kent said “inspired by nearly 26 years of involvement in the cadet movement and a strong belief in the importance of young people being actively involved in civic life I am proud to be introducing the Mayor’s Cadet role during my term of office.

“The Mayor’s Cadet role, similar in prestige to the Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet, will recognise outstanding young people from our local cadet organisations and give them the opportunity to represent Wrexham at civic events while acting as ambassadors for youth service and leadership.

“A huge thank you to Cllr Beverley Parry-Jones for her support in helping bring this proposal forward, and to the Council officers who worked hard behind the scenes to ensure it was ready for approval.

“This is a proud moment for Wrexham and a positive step in celebrating and encouraging youth leadership, service, and civic engagement.”
