Plas Pentwyn makes Halloween a spooky success!

Over 325 local children and adults descended on Plas Pentwyn Resource Centre, Coedpoeth, on Saturday, October 28 to celebrate Halloween in style!

Every year the management committee, consisting of 12 local volunteers, try to do something different.  This year, the event included a ‘spooky games’ room where members of the committee handmade items such as a horror box which had brains and dead man’s fingers inside (jelly and sausages).  Other games included ‘Splat the Spook’ and ‘Tin Can Alley’.  All of these spooky games were put on alongside a disco, a craft room and a ghost hunt with real spooks along the way!

  • Frustrated? Don’t let your anger get the better of you

Frustrated? Don’t let your anger get the better of you

The majority of Wrexham Council customers are polite and courteous, and we really appreciate that.

However, we understand that a lot of issues we deal with can make people feel passionate or concerned, causing a small number to cross the line.

To help staff deal with this effectively, we’ve updated our ‘Abusive, Unreasonably Persistent and/or Vexatious Persons’ policy.

The changes widen the scope of the policy and make it easier for us to address inappropriate behaviour by customers.

We believe our customers have the right to be heard, understood and respected. But we also believe our staff have the same rights.

So we expect customers to be polite and courteous in their dealings with our staff, and will take appropriate steps against people that cross the line.

    “Abusive behaviour cannot be tolerated”

Cllr David Kelly, lead member for organisation – planning and corporate services, said: “The policy has been updated for the small number of people who behave in an abusive, vexatious or unreasonably persistent way.

“We appreciate frustration can cause people to act out of character and our staff are trained to deal sympathetically in such situations.

“However, abusive behaviour cannot be tolerated and the procedure within the updated policy will ensure such behaviour is dealt with in a fair and transparent manner.”

Love books? You don’t want to miss this…

The dates of the 2018 Carnival of Words, one of the leading book festivals in North Wales and the Marches, have been announced.

Literary events will be held at venues across Wrexham between Saturday, April 21 and Saturday, April 28 and organisers are busy lining-up an exciting and innovative programme.

The Wrexham Carnival of Words has been a resounding success since it was first held in 2015, with an increasing range of events, which have proved popular with local people.

GET INSTANT NEWS AND INFO FROM WREXHAM COUNCIL WITH MYUPDATES.

From the beginning it has helped local authors bring their work to a wider audience, as well as bringing a range of popular and well-known authors to Wrexham to talk about their books, their literary influences and the experience of writing for others.

You don’t have to wait until April…

If April seems a long way off, several events are planned before then as a prelude to the 2018 Carnival.

There will be a performance of Bothered and Bewildered at Wrexham Library on Tuesday, November 28 at 7pm.

Playwright Gail Young will talk about the background to her comedy drama, which is a moving insight into the realities of dementia.  Gail and friends will perform extracts from the play, which follows Irene and her two daughters Louise and Beth as the girls lose their mum in spirit but not body.

    Inspire fabulous stories…

Best-selling author William Ryan (the Korolev series and The Constant Solider) will lead two afternoon workshops for budding writers on Tuesday, December 6 at Wrexham Library.

The first workshop, entitled Inspirational Resources for Writers, will demonstrate how to use archive material to inspire fabulous stories.

It’ll be followed by Improving First Drafts, in which William Ryan will show how to take that initial text and polish it to perfection.

Also at Wrexham Library, at 7pm, will be William Ryan’s spell-binding talk, The Hoecker Photos: From Artefacts to Fiction.

In 2007, a retired American military intelligence officer donated an extraordinary collection of photographs to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.  The photographs were taken between June 1944 and January 1945 and belonged to Karl Hoecker, adjutant to Richard Baer, the last commander of Auschwitz.

When author William Ryan came across them he was fascinated.  Because in the photographs we see very ordinary men, on the face of it, except that they are some of the worst mass murderers in history.

William will show some of the Hoecker photographs and explain how he used them and other photographs to create a work of fiction that is, at the same time, firmly rooted in history.

Tickets for all events are available at Wrexham Library.

The full 2018 programme will be announced in January and details will also be available on the Carnival of Words website
