You won’t believe how beautiful our country parks are

In Wrexham we’re proud of our parks…and we challenge you not to be impressed by their amazing views and natural beauty.

We’re inviting everyone in Wrexham to make the effort to visit one of these treasures during Love Parks week from Friday, July 14.

They’re spread all over the county borough and each offers something different.

From the animals and spectacular Cefn Viaduct at Ty Mawr to the cycle tracks and sculpture trail at Alyn Waters, we’re sure you’ll find something to amaze you…and get you out into the fresh air.

We’ve even got one within two minutes’ walk of the town centre at Bellevue, so you can take a lunchtime stroll if you work in town.

Six of our parks fly the coveted Green Flags. And thanks to their ‘friends and volunteers’ groups, all are kept in tip-top condition and offer events and activities for all ages.

“…some of the most spectacular and breathtaking scenery in Wales…”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead member for Environment and Transport, said:

“In Wrexham we have some of the most spectacular and breathtaking scenery in Wales, and indeed the UK.  Please don’t stay at home…please make the effort to get to know your local park or explore one you haven’t visited before.”

And if you visit our parks, send us your photos.

We have 11 country parks: Ty Mawr Country Park, Nant Mill Visitor Centre and Park, Ponciau Banks, Moss Valley Country Park, Alyn Waters Country Park, Acton Park, Bellevue Park, Bonc yr Hafod Country Park, Stryt Las Park, Bryn Kinalt Park and Minera Lead Mines Country Park.

  • Artist Katie Cuddon is thrilled to be working in Wrexham…and this is why

Artist Katie Cuddon is thrilled to be working in Wrexham…and this is why

A huge public artwork for the Oriel Wrecsam People’s Market development will be created by artist Katie Cuddon…and she’s really excited about it.

She beat off a strong field of applications from artists across the UK to get the commission, including a consultation event with local traders and interview process.

GET INSTANT NEWS AND INFO FROM WREXHAM COUNCIL WITH MYUPDATES.

Katie will now be commissioned to produce a monumental artwork for the inaugural Wal Pawb (‘everybody’s wall’). Bright, bold and playful work is expected to feature as a focal point for the new centre.

Wal Pawb will show the coming together of the arts and markets within the new development. The final artwork will span two billboards and the largest will be nine metres long. Each of the two billboards will feature three images on rotation.

Over the coming six months Katie will work with a variety of groups and members of the public to gather inspiration for the work. Katie’s work for Wal Pawb will be unveiled as part of the opening of the new arts, markets and cultural centre in spring 2018.

The artwork will be in place for 12 months before a new commission takes its place.

“I’m looking forward to working with traders and users of the market…”

Katie said: “I’m thrilled to be selected to create a series of artworks for the Wal Pawb.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity to create work for a very innovative and unusual context: the coming together of art gallery and market place.

“I’m looking forward to working with traders and users of the market and the rich visual imagery a market presents.

“I want the final works to contain all the weird and wonderful images, energy, sociability and life of a market so it reflects the environment it’s in, whilst also being a world within itself.”

“…prominent part of our new arts and markets facility”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “Congratulations to Katie who impressed those involved in the selection process who thought Katie’s level of experience shone through.

“I look forward to seeing her creations, which will be a prominent part of our new arts and markets facility”

At the forefront of this project is engagement with the local community, whilst also demonstrating the standard of artwork that can be expected in the new development.

The final outcome, and subsequent editions of Wal Pawb will be something for Wrexham to be proud of, whilst also attracting national recognition.

Katie has previously shown her work in Wales, across the UK and internationally.

  • Is Welsh the bread and butter of your business?

Is Welsh the bread and butter of your business?

Are businesses in Wrexham making the best use of the Welsh language? Could they build up stronger links with their customers through using Welsh?

Wrexham Council is carrying out a survey, open to businesses across the county borough, to see what use they’re making of the Welsh language, and whether or not they want further Welsh language training.

Once the survey is complete, the council will look to introduce a ‘Supporting the Welsh language’ scheme, which would recognise businesses keen to back the Welsh language.

Build your links with Welsh-speaking customers

Welsh can be a useful benefit to small businesses trading at a local level, as offering a bilingual service improves the quality of their customer service and can help to build all-important customer loyalty.

Nigel Jones, of ME Evans Ltd Butchers, which trades in the Butchers Market on the High Street, has already seen the plusses of having a Welsh speaker on his team.

Mr Jones said: “I’ve got one Welsh-speaking member of staff who works on Saturdays, and we have Welsh-speaking customers who will come in on Saturday to speak specifically to that member of staff – and orders will go up as a result.”

    Welsh is an “untapped resource”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “For a lot of businesses, the Welsh language could be an untapped resource which would help them build stronger links with their customers.

“As Mr Jones of ME Evans Ltd noted, some businesses will see an increase in takings thanks to the strong links built by Welsh-speaking staff with Welsh-speaking customers.

“And other businesses make good use of the Welsh language in helping to construct their local brand – especially if they make use of produce sourced in Wales.

“Others have expressed interest in providing staff with some basic Welsh language training in order to greet customers in their native language.

“As part of our commitment to seeing use of the Welsh language increase in Wrexham, we want to see if we can help as many businesses as possible engage with their customers in Welsh.

“I would encourage any business owners interested to take part in the survey.”

For more information, fill out the survey here.
