  • Could business survey bolster efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour?

Could business survey bolster efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour?

A survey of local businesses could help efforts to reduce anti-social behaviour in Wrexham town centre.

Wrexham Council says it supports the move by a business in Grosvenor Road to conduct a survey into how neighbouring firms are being affected by anti-social behaviour, and that the findings could boost ongoing work.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, says: “This is a really complex problem and there’s no easy solution.

“The council is working hard – together with the police, NHS, emergency services and third sector – to improve things, and understanding the perspective of local businesses is a really important part of that.

“We hope the businesses will share their findings with us and want to work with them as much as possible.”

    Complicated issue

A unique partnership that pulls together resources and expertise from across the public and third sectors has already been set up in Wrexham.

The partnership believes that working together to provide better options for people affected by homelessness and substance-misuse will be key.

Cllr Jones says: “If we can help people move away from this lifestyle, that will improve things for them – and for local businesses and the public.

“Lots of towns and cities are grappling with issues around anti-social behaviour, homelessness and substance-misuse – including ‘new psychoactive substances.’

“We need to find a way to meet the needs of everyone – including the people affected by substance-misuse, local businesses and the public.

“It’s a complicated issue that Wrexham Council and its partners are committed to tackling.

“None of us are ignoring this or burying our heads in the sand. We’re in this together.”

  • Car park due to close – find out more here

Car park due to close – find out more here

A small car park in the town centre is due to close at the start of next month.

The Rhosddu Road car park, at the back of Wrexham Library, will close to the public permanently from Sunday, August 13.

The car park, which provides eight disabled parking spots, will close as the former gallery building is taken over as the town centre headquarters for North Wales Police, replacing the current site at Bodhyfryd.

GET INSTANT NEWS AND INFO FROM WREXHAM COUNCIL WITH MYUPDATES.

With the police taking over the site, the back of the library can no longer be used as a public car park.

    Alternative spaces available

Alternative disabled parking will be available in the Library car park.

As a result of the upcoming closure of the Rhosddu Road car park, disabled parking capacity at the Library site has gone from 15 to 23 – replacing the eight lost with the closure of Rhosddu Road.

The Library car park is just 150 yards away from Rhosddu Road. The nearby Guildhall car park, with four disabled spaces, is also open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We never want to lose disabled parking provision in the town centre, but luckily, the Rhosddu Road car park is so close to other car parks that its closure is likely to have a minimal impact on users.

“We’ve also replaced the spaces lost at Rhosddu Road by increasing provision at the Library car park, meaning overall parking provision for disabled users has remained the same.”

  • How green is your garden? Find out how to keep it eco-friendly

How green is your garden? Find out how to keep it eco-friendly

Are you planning on getting any gardening done during the summer?

While the weather hasn’t been perfect, plenty of people will take the opportunity to get their fingers green when the weather behaves.

If clearing away any dead plants or getting the mowing done, remember to dispose of it properly in your garden waste bin.

GET INSTANT NEWS AND INFO FROM WREXHAM COUNCIL WITH MYUPDATES.

All garden waste is collected by Wrexham Council and used for making compost, which can then go on to be used at other gardens.

Don’t throw the good stuff away!

While it might look like unsightly rubbish, garden waste – such as grass, weeds, dead flowers and leaves – is perfect for composting and is rich in everything gardens need to keep healthy.

Last year, Wrexham Council and our waste recycling partners FCC Environment donated more than 420 tonnes of free compost to the public – with more than a further 320 tonnes of composted garden waste used to feed plants in our public grounds and gardens.

Anyone looking to embark on a gardening project this summer can collect free compost from waste collection sites across the county borough

Cllr David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Garden waste is one of the easiest things there is to recycle – all we have to do is compost it, and it’s ready to be used again.

“We’d urge people never to throw it away – there’s no sense in wasting it, and it can do gardens the world of good.”

Cut out the middleman – compost your own garden waste

As well as containing garden waste for collection, members of the public can also order their own compost bins, which can be used to compost garden waste and kitchen vegetable waste.

The composters quickly and easily recycle organic and kitchen waste into rich, nutritious compost that is ideal for retaining moisture in the garden.

Residents can order home composters by phoning 01978 298989 or e-mail contact_us@wrexham.gov.uk

Congratulations to Helen Roberts, who has won the June spot of our Wonders of Wrexham Calendar Competition.
