“We support Ukraine’s right to live in peace and freedom” – Wrexham sends message of support

    Update 11.3.22

Understandably many people in Wrexham will be keen to do all they can to offer support to displaced Ukrainian people in their time of need.

The generosity that has already been shown is amazing.

The Welsh Government’s guidance page – Ukraine: support for people affected – describes ways to help and also provides important information on available help and support for those impacted by the situation in Ukraine.

Wrexham Council has sent a message of support to Ukraine, as the free world continues to urge Russian President Vladimir Putin to call off his invasion.

The Kremlin’s attack has been underway since Thursday, and has already caused tremendous suffering and upheaval in the region.

The council plans to fly the Ukrainian flag from the Guildhall, and will light up the building in Ukrainian colours as a show of solidarity.

    Praying for peace

Councillor Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council, says:

“We fully support and stand in solidarity with Ukraine during this difficult and dark time.

“The courage and determination of the Ukrainian people has been incredible, and we all hope and pray that the Russian government will realise its actions are wrong.

“We would also like to express our support for Russians who have spoken out against Putin and who want to live in peace with their Ukrainian neighbours.

“It takes real courage to speak out against the government in Russia, and we shouldn’t forget that many Russian people do not want this war and will be suffering as well.

“We are praying for Ukraine, and we are praying that peace and humanity will prevail.”

    Thoughts and prayers

Councillor David A Bithell, Deputy Leader of the Council, says:

“We just want the Ukrainian people to know that we’re with them – that we support their right to live their lives in peace and freedom.

“What the Russian government has done is wrong. Lives have been ruined, families torn apart and futures taken away in the blink of an eye.

“The events we’re seeing unfold are terrible, and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is suffering.

“Wrexham might only be a small county borough in North Wales, but like the rest of Wales and the UK, we stand in solidarity with Ukraine.”

  • Award winning recognition for social enterprise in Chirk

Award winning recognition for social enterprise in Chirk

The Mayor and Leader of Wrexham Council recently paid a visit to a local social enterprise to recognise and celebrate a prestigious award they received.

Glyn Wyfla, which is based in Chirk near the Chirk Aqueduct (part of the World Heritage Site), began trading as a social enterprise hub back in 2013 and has been going from strength to strength over the past nine years.

    Starting from scratch

The original building was once a private house built in 1899 which had been stood empty and in a state of disrepair. A team got together and created a business plan to take to the board at Wrexham Council with their vision for the site. The council backed the project and gave it the green light.

After securing funding from the lottery, the team set about obtaining the house with its grounds and began the renovation of the site.

The site now boasts an 80-seater café with a newly added outdoor gazebo seating area while the house itself is now used as commercial offices for eleven local companies who have created 30 jobs collectively.

All profits made from Glyn Wylfa are either put back into improving the building and services further or funding the local charity groups in the area. This includes groups such as the youth football team, bowling and cricket clubs, to Nightingale House Hospice and Hope House plus many more.

    Hard work paying off

The hard work and dedication from all involved in making Glyn Wylfa has paid off and has been recognised many times.

For the past two consecutive years, Glyn Wylfa has made it to the Natwest Top 100 Social Enterprises in the UK list. They were finalists in the Welsh Social Enterprise Awards which was where they were put forward for the UK Social Enterprise Awards 2021.

Finance and Operations Director for Glyn Wylfa, Brian Colley was invited down to the Guildhall in London for the awards where they found tremendous success. It was here that Glyn Wylfa were the winners of the UK Social Enterprise Awards 2021 – Category 13 – Transformative Community Business award.

Mr Colley said: “We owe our success to our amazing employees and our fantastic manager, Chris who has been with us for five years now. A huge thanks to our voluntary directors who give up so much of their time to help us and a big thanks to Wrexham County Borough Council and the wonderful community of Chirk. We really do have a great community and it’s a pleasure to be a part of”.

Mick Ramsey, Chairman of Glyn Wylfa Limited said: “ The success we’ve achieved is far beyond anything we anticipated at the start of this project which is fantastic. It’s superb for the community and we receive great support from the people of Chirk. We’re very pleased with all we’ve achieved”.

    The guided tour

The Mayor of Wrexham, Councillor Ronnie Prince and the Leader of the Council, Councillor Mark Pritchard, paid Glyn Wylfa a visit to thank them for their continued work in the community and to congratulate them on their award win.

During the visit, they got to meet members of staff and see what goes on. Councillor Terry Evans was also in attendance who said: “This is something myself and former councillor and Mayor, Ian Roberts, fought for. We had a vision for a community hub and we got local people in to come and help run the show.

“The success is absolutely phenomenal. They’ve gone from strength to strength and put money back into the building to keep improving and also into the community for a positive difference. I’m thrilled to bits and so proud of what has come of Glyn Wylfa”.

After taking in all the different elements that bring the community hub together, Councillor Mark Pritchard said: “Can I firstly congratulate everyone on the success of obtaining and renovating the building for community use. It has been a very successful community partnership between themselves and Wrexham County Borough Council.

“I’m delighted and pleased to be here to celebrate their great achievement on winning the award and seeing the excellent work that goes on here. I would like to thank and congratulate the organisation for working tirelessly with commitment and dedication to fulfil all their goals.”

“I’d also like to thank Brian and Mike for their guided tour of this wonderful place. It was great to see such good work in the community first hand”.

The Mayor was very impressed to see what goes on in the day-to-day operations of Glyn Wylfa and said: “It has been marvellous to come here today to meet the amazing staff that work so hard to bring such a positive impact to the community and celebrate their well-deserved award win.

“I’ve had a look around and the work that goes on and has gone into this project is outstanding. I look forward to being a frequent visitor in the future”.

  • North Wales Metro Not Delivering for Wrexham

North Wales Metro Not Delivering for Wrexham

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport has voiced his concerns that despite promises for better rail links between Wrexham and Bidston red tape has now left the plans for 2 trains per hour up in the air.

The Office of Rail and Road is arbitrating between Transport for Wales and a freight company in Penyffordd who runs trains over the railway line.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

Lead Member for Transport and Deputy Leader of Wrexham Council, Cllr David A Bithell said, “It appears that the ORR are trying to resolve a dispute who has preference to run trains on the line which I find unbelievable and frustrating as promises were made that by May 2022 Wrexham would have two trains per hour.

“On one hand we are told that improvements on the A483 is being delayed for a roads review and now that freight trains have preference over passengers. We are also actively encouraged to promote and support using public transport and Active Travel schemes.”

Cllr Bithell added, “The rail network runs 24 hours and urged the ORR to find a solution with Transport for Wales and has asked local MPs to lobby UK Secretary of State Grant Shapps to intervene.

“I have also written to Lesley Griffiths MS and Sarah Atherton MP for Wrexham urging them to make representation.”

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.

  • Ysgol yr Hafod-update

    Ysgol yr Hafod-update

As part of our 21st Schools Band B Programme, we’re investing £4.5m to redevelop Ysgol yr Hafod Bangor Road site, improving educational facilities for children and staff and uniting the school onto one site. Work includes the redevelopment of the old school house to accommodate the early years entitlement meaning the one site will accommodate all pupils aged 3 to 11.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

From Tuesday 1 March 2022, all age groups will be temporarily taught at the foundation phase site (Melyd Avenue) so work at the Bangor Road site can begin.

The site at Bangor Road will be handed over to our contractor and will be classed as a construction site-so there will be no access allowed.

Wynne Construction, are expected to start work on the Bangor Road side late March/early April.

The Victorian frontage on the Bangor Road site will be retained as part of the area’s heritage. Work is expected to last 52 weeks is set to be completed by April 2023.

Our Highways Department Road Safety Section have been working with Ysgol yr Hafod to ensure that traffic issues related to the redevelopment and re-location of pupils are kept to a minimum.

There are a number of measures in place to mitigate the parking concerns of local residents. This includes additional white H-bar road markings and we are also asking that during busy periods, please be mindful of our neighbours and avoid blocking driveways or parking in a way that disrupts traffic flow.

The School Crossing Patrol will be relocated to the foundation phase site for the duration of this period to assist the school staff during drop off and pick up times.

We encourage parents and guardians to walk children to school and we will be encouraging active travel for the next 12 months including dedicated walk to school days.

Due to limited staff parking at Melyd Avenue we are working with the school and Bowling Club to extend capacity.

As the project progresses we will be communicating on works at Bangor Road and additional parking measures agreed as part of the planning conditions.

We will provide the community with regular updates and timescales during the course of the project.

Wrexham Council Lead Member for Education Cllr Phil Wynn said: “This exciting development is just part of our ongoing commitment to update and improve facilities across the county for our young learners.”

Local councillor and Chair of Governors at Ysgol Yr Hafod, Cllr David A Bithell said: “On behalf of the School’s Governing Body I would like to thank the community for your patience and understanding as we work towards providing a fantastic hub for learning that will benefit generations to come”

  • Work to clear up after storms continues

Work to clear up after storms continues

Following three storms in a row our Streetscene staff are still busy across the county borough cleaning up.

About 35 trees fell due to the winds and many more were damaged.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

The A525 and Straight Mile at Bangor on Dee remain closed. Please do not drive through any flooded roads and use the diversions in place.

Bin collections were unaffected by the storms.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said, “There’s a lot of work ahead to check trees in all our country parks, cemeteries and crematorium and people are urged to be cautious if visiting any of these areas.

“I’d like to thank staff for their work throughout the storms and in the weeks to come. They’ve risen to the challenges faced in order to keep people safe.”

We’re also aware that there was some relatively minor damage to one of the viewing platforms attached to the Engine House at Minera which we are currently assessing.

A part of the platform has collapsed onto the ground and this area is fenced off and has warning signs displayed.

Staff have visited the site and confirmed that immediate action isn’t needed at the moment. The structure will be properly assessed and remedial action undertaken as necessary.

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.

  • Markets Refurbishment – Traders receive latest update about the plans

Markets Refurbishment – Traders receive latest update about the plans

We’ve recently met with our tenants in the Butcher’s and General Markets to update them with the latest progress on the plans to refurbish the markets to make them fit for use for many more years.

Traders were shown outline design proposals of the listed buildings and we are working with them to identify suitable trading accommodation during the development works.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

The refurbishment is part of the Wrexham Townscape Heritage Scheme plans and work on this historic part of Wrexham will begin once all the plans and permissions are in place.

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for the Economy, said, “It’s only right that the traders are the first to hear of our plans and to give their feedback before final plans are in place.

“There’s a long way to go yet as both are listed buildings and we have to make sure nothing is proposed that could be viewed as detrimental to either listing.

“The works form part of the wider town centre regeneration which has seen several buildings in this part of town improved and renovated.”

“The Butcher’s Market was opened in 1848 and the General Market in 1879. Neither have had any extensive renovation works and it’s time that we look to the future of both the existing tenants and future tenants to ensure these two markets flourish in the town centre.”

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.
