    Penblwydd Hapus Tŷ Pawb!

Can you believe it? Tŷ Pawb is five years old!

And what a five years it’s been! Since that wet, wonderful Bank Holiday Monday back in 2018, when 10,000 people came out to see us to open our doors for the first time, Tŷ Pawb has grown to become a thriving, multi-award winning markets, arts and community facility, an Art Fund Museum of the Year finalist, and a nationally recognised, pioneering example of how to reimagine a public building.

These achievements would not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of the community of traders, artists, staff, volunteers and all the other countless groups and individuals who form part of our Tŷ Pawb family.

So, to celebrate this milestone, we’ve been delving through our short (but sizable) archives to pick out some of the best moments from our first five years. Moments that sum up what Tŷ Pawb is all about.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

Summing up our story in a short space has been quite the task! A lot has happened since 2018….

    • We’ve welcomed over 1,240,400 people through our doors.
    • We’ve displayed 31 exhibitions, featuring over 700 artists.
    • We’ve hosted over 300 performances.
    • We’ve become home to  over 30 traders offering a wide range of exciting products and homemade food.
    • We’ve won awards, including the Gold Medal for Architecture at the Llangollen Eisteddfod, Architects Journal Retrofit of the Year & Best Cultural Building under £5m.
    • In 2022, we reached the final five shortlist for Art Fund’s Museum of The Year – the biggest museum prize in the World!

    ‘A brilliant and brave idea’

Cllr Hugh Jones said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved with Tŷ Pawb for their contribution in creating something, unique, ground breaking and truly special in Wrexham city centre.

“Over five years, Tŷ Pawb’s distinctive cultural and commercial offer has grown and evolved into a fantastic facility, loved locally and recognised nationally and internationally as a leading example of how to reimagine an existing building into a thriving community space. It has also shown enormous resilience, innovation, and creativity to meet the challenges of a turbulent world, when required; the superb Arts At Home programme, delivered during lockdown, being a perfect example of this.”

“Throughout all of this, the team have stayed true to Tŷ Pawb’s core vision of bringing arts, markets and communities together under one roof, inspired by the belief that art can be a tool for social change.

“Tŷ Pawb has also made an invaluable contribution to Wrexham’s burgeoning cultural scene. As well as drawing national and international coverage and acclaim in its own right, it played a key role in helping us to reach the final shortlist for City of Culture in 2022.”

“Art Fund’s Museum of the Year judges described Tŷ Pawb as: ‘A brilliant and brave idea’. Everyone in Wrexham can be very proud to have this on our doorstep. We are all excited to see what exciting times lie in the years ahead.”

  • Wrexham to host international sporting events…

Wrexham to host international sporting events…

    Guest article – Tennis Wales

It’s not just football putting Wrexham sports on the map, as international tennis tournaments descend on the city.

This spring – April and May – Wrexham are set to welcome three national and international tennis competitions, supported by free tennis ‘give it a go’ events for the local community.

The Tennis Europe Junior Tour – taking place at Wrexham Tennis Centre (1st – 8th of April) – is the first of three international tennis events taking place in the city. Expecting to host over 600 players from across the globe, Wrexham represents the Welsh leg of the Europe-wide event series.

Now in its 33rd year, the Junior Tour has become the tournament of choice for the launch of many a successful tennis career. Perhaps most notably, the Junior Tour has heralded the arrival of world-class tennis players such as Justine Henin, Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki, and Sir Andy Murray.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

Players wishing to follow in the match points (or footsteps) of their tennis idols at this year’s Tennis Europe competition will be aiming to achieve coveted European ranking points.

Flying the flag for Wales, tennis prodigies Awen Gwilym-Davies and Niall Pickerd-Barua from Cardiff will be looking to ace the competition. Neither Awen nor Niall are strangers to international competition – with each of them competing at the renowned Junior Orange Bowl Championships in the USA last December.

Awen said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for Welsh players to play against the best from the UK and further afield which makes Tennis Europe events so special. We can share stories, experiences and learn from each other, and if Ryan and Rob want to pop along after the football, we’d be happy to have a knock with them too! A special pob lwc to all the Welsh players!

Niall commented: “I am really looking forward to be back again playing the Tennis Europe in Wrexham. I won the under 12 event last year, so I am obviously excited to compete again. I know it will be tough, as I will be playing in the older age group this time, but I will do my best.”

Offering a further opportunity for players to compete at a high-performance level, April will also see Wrexham Tennis Centre host the highest-ranked tournament in Wales – the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) Junior Welsh Open (8 – 16 April).

Players from across the UK – under 10s category to under 18s –– will have a chance test out their drop shots and pick up some LTA British ranking points as they strive to become Wales’s top players; following the likes of 2021 Wimbledon Wildcard Mimi Xu and Welsh number 1 Evan Hoyt.

The tennis tournament timeline continues into May as the international courts open once again, welcoming players from across the globe to Wrexham for the ITF World Junior Tour, from 20 – 26 May.

Tennis Wales Competitions and Event Manager Mark Lewis said: “Wrexham Tennis Centre is an important national, and international facility. The three upcoming tournaments, that will showcase the best in junior tennis, underline how Welsh tennis is thriving and continuing to contribute to local, national, and international sporting communities.

“We look forward to seeing many of the players at these events will go on to big things on the senior circuit.”

To further support and bolster the tennis scene within the local community – who are welcoming the tournaments with open arms – Tennis Wales, in partnership with Wrexham Tennis Centre and Wrexham County Borough Council will be hosting a series of free events later in the year, where children and families can pick up a racket and give tennis a go.

With tennis fever sweeping across Wrexham, July 10 – 14 will mark a school’s roadshow where tennis will be taken into 10 schools across the city, giving around 1000 schoolchildren the chance to try tennis.

Following the roadshow, Wrexham Tennis Centre will host an open day on 15 July, where families will be able to enjoy fun-filled tennis activities for free. There are also plans for a pop-up tennis court to be installed in the city centre.

Jonathan Miller, Health and Wellbeing Lead at Wrexham County Borough Council said: “Tennis is an important sport for us here in Wrexham. We are proud to have Wrexham Tennis Centre, a venue which attracts high level tennis events such as these.

“The centre is also important to the community, who can access the facilities weekly to play and socialise, while it a great place to volunteer and work in tennis. Playing tennis brings great physical and mental benefits and we believe, like Tennis Wales it’s important to ‘open up’ the sport to everybody.”

Further information on the open days and pop-up courts will be announced on the Tennis Wales social media: Twitter @tenniswales; Facebook @TennisWales; Instagram @tennis_wales

Tennis Wales Ltd is the National Governing Body for Tennis in Wales. We’re a not-for-profit organisation affiliated with the Lawn Tennis Association of Great Britain. We work in partnership towards a vision of ‘tennis opened up’ in Wales. In partnership with our sponsors and Sport Wales, we work collaboratively to make tennis relevant, accessible, welcoming & enjoyable.

Individuals displaced by War, Persecution and natural disasters to perform at special “We Rise Together” concert

People from Wrexham and as far afield as Ukraine, Afghanistan and Iran are set to perform at a special concert ‘We Rise Together,’  held at St Giles Church on April 1st 2023.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

The concert, supported by a #Wrecsam2029 City of Culture commission, will see individuals who call Wrexham and Wales their home, performing with individuals who have found, or are seeking sanctuary here.

An asylum seeker is someone who has arrived in a country and asked for asylum. Asylum is when a government accepts that your home country is unable or unwilling to ensure your protection and allows you to remain in their country in order to stay safe-this can be due to circumstances such as war, persecution or natural disasters. Once someone is determined as needing protection, they become known as a refugee.

The concert will see musical performances from NEW Sinfonia, as well as the NEW Voices choir that includes voices from all over the world.

Project Lead Robert Guy said: “This is genuinely one of the best projects I have ever worked on. “We have people from all over the world involved, united in music and song. “It’s not uncommon to hear several languages at once being spoken during rehearsal, and it’s great to see people from different backgrounds connecting over a coffee afterwards.”

A collection for UareUK (United to Assist Refugees UK) will be held at the event. UARE UK provide practical and emotional support to help asylum seekers and refugees to feel welcome, supported and safe. Jane Townend from UareUK said: “supporting refugees isn’t just about aid and practical aspects, it’s also about coming together to find human connection that lifts the soul and heart when faced with dark times. “Those involved are saying it’s helping them to have something to focus on and how important music is to lift spirits and to feel hope.”

Lead member for City of Culture at Wrexham Council, Cllr Hugh Jones said: “The City of Culture 2025 bid certainly united the city. “It’s great to see that fantastic work continuing in uniting communities, and I’m excited to see what focus our 2029 City of Culture bid brings in developing and enhancing our cultural offering in Wrexham, and beyond.”

The ‘We Rise Together’ concert will be staged at St Giles Church, Wrexham on April 1st at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced from £1 to £15 and are available by visiting the NEW Sinfonia Website: https://www.newsinfonia.org.uk/event-details/we-rise-together

While the concert itself has received funding, a Just Giving page has been set up to raise money for the wider NEW Voices programme and anybody wishing to make a donation can do so via www.gofundme.com/f/fund-our-project-with-new-voices-and-uareuk

A donation to help our Ukrainians friends participate in the concert and future ones has been gratefully received thanks to Ian Lawson and all at Pure Utility Solutions in Chester.
