Show your support for Earth Hour on 25 March

Once again we’re supporting Earth Hour by encouraging staff, organisations and residents to switch off the lights for an hour on 25 March between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.
Whether it’s switching off from distractions for an hour or spending time with others – Earth Hour’s a time to reconnect to what’s important.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

    GET INVOLVED

You’re not alone! Millions of others are switching off for Earth Hour across the world – join the conversation on social media for inspiration and share what you’re doing. #EarthHourWales

    GET CREATIVE

Switching off for Earth Hour doesn’t have to mean being in total darkness! You could create a lantern or a puppet then bring them to life during the hour using a torch or candlelight.

    GET THINKING

Use the hour to talk to friends and families about the things that are important to you.

Cllr David A Bithell, Climate Champion, said “We are always very proud to support Earth Hour and we know that lots of our residents take part too.

“The WWF by promoting Earth Hour plays a huge part in raising awareness of the fragile state of our environment and as a local authority we too must play our part.

“I am pleased we are progressing well with our decarbonisation plans by making our buildings more efficient, limiting the amount of plastic we use and installing electric vehicle charges in our car parks.

“We will continue with our work into the next financial year and will keep you informed of progress.”

  • Wrexham aspires to become ‘capital of play’

Wrexham aspires to become ‘capital of play’

    Guest article from Play Wales

Let’s take a minute to think back to where we played as children.  Was it dressing up…looking for treasure…rolling down hills… jumpers for goal posts?

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

Most adults recall their childhoods as having plenty of time to play with their friends in and around their neighbourhoods.  We tend to remember everyday adventures-opportunities we found and made ourselves and with our siblings, cousins, friends.

Playing has always been and continues to be central to children’s physical, mental, social and emotional health and wellbeing. For children themselves, playing is one of the most important aspects of their lives. They value time, freedom and good places to play. When asked what is important to them, children in Wrexham consistently mention playing and meeting up with their friends.

Wrexham already has a clear vision for improving conditions for children’s play. This encompasses:

    • improving access and the quality of spaces for play
    • parent and professional understanding of play
    • the role decision makers have.

In late 2021, Wrexham Council set itself the challenge to become the ‘capital of play’.  This was part of Wrexham’s bid to be named the UK’s City of Culture 2025.

There is a strong history of play and playwork in Wrexham with a committed playwork network encompassing the three adventure playgrounds and the Council’s play development team.  This playwork network busied itself and collaborated with the UK’s City of Culture steering group to plan a range of playful events for the all-important visit from the City of Culture panel of judges back in May 2022.

Although Bradford was the successful bidder, the inclusion of children’s play as a key feature in Wrexham’s bid should be celebrated and maintained.  Wrexham is rightly proud of what has been achieved to date; however, there is aspirational target of becoming a ‘Capital of Play’.

The aim is to be a county which exemplifies what it is to be truly child-friendly, where children playing in their community is an indicator of such aspirations and Wrexham is a place where all adults understand their responsibility for improving conditions for children’s play.

The places where children play are wide and varied. Play can occur wherever and whenever conditions are right, both indoors and outdoors, in places such as the parks, school, childcare, hospitals.

Likewise, the play workforce is a highly diverse group, most of whom do not require formal qualifications in play to undertake their roles. The range of stakeholders covered by the definition ‘play workforce’ includes those whose role impacts directly or indirectly on the children’s play

This includes those working in education, social services, early years and childcare, health, and youth services.  It also includes those in planning, housing, open spaces, parks, cultural services, environmental services, travel, highways, community development, leisure and sport across statutory services.

We know that playing contributes to the wellbeing and resilience of human beings – particularly young ones. Having welcoming places, enough time and the company of others to play with every day, is of great consequence to all children and young people – as adults we need to foster environments that support this.

    About Play Wales

Play Wales is the national charity for children’s play in Wales. All children are entitled to be able to play within their communities and we work to achieve this goal on their behalf, identifying solutions to enable more children to play more everyday.   Play Wales is pleased to be working with Wrexham Council to explore ways it can meet its aspiration to become a ‘capital of play.’

  • Stockwell Grove Tree Planting event this Saturday

Stockwell Grove Tree Planting event this Saturday

Don’t forget the next tree planting event takes place on Saturday 18 March at Stockwell Grove, running from 10am until 3pm.

Please ensure you wear warm clothes, wellies and bring gloves. Tree planting is an activity people of all ages can get involved in so come along for a fun, family session, planting trees for a greener tomorrow.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

We’ve been working with The Woodland Trust and Llais y Goedwig to plant trees throughout the county this Autumn and Winter.

It’s all part of the ‘My Tree, Our Forest’ Welsh Government funded tree giveaway that aims to distribute a free tree to all households in Wales. This phase (Nov 2022 – March 2023) aims to give away 295,000 trees. These trees are being distributed from 50 community hubs around Wales.

The Plant a Tree for Me (PAT4Me) option of My Tree Our Forest, facilitated and supported by Llais y Goedwig, enables households that do not have access to their own tree planting space or do not wish to claim their tree to have a tree planted on their behalf.

We’re committed to protecting trees and woodlands throughout county as part of the Tree and Woodland Strategy. In partnership with the Woodland Trust, Emergency Tree Fund we aim to increase canopy cover throughout the county

It’s vital now more than ever utilise our open green spaces to respond to the nature and climate emergency we are facing. Tree planting projects such as this will build connectivity between existing habitats,  improve ecosystem resilience as well as create inviting and enjoyable places to visit.

We are always looking for schools, businesses and community groups to get involved with our tree planting schemes so if you are interested in volunteering please get in touch via woodlandpledge@wrexham.gov.uk You can also lend your support for the protection of trees and woodlands within Wrexham through the Wrexham Woodland Pledge on our website Wrexham Woodland Pledge | Wrexham County Borough Council and through facebook and twitter.

  • Act with caution if you receive a suspicious telephone call

Act with caution if you receive a suspicious telephone call

Wrexham Council’s Trading Standards team has been made aware of a number of suspicious unsolicited telephone calls either raising concerns over the safety of, or offering to improve the performance of, a resident’s loft insulation.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

The callers have been reported as claiming that there may be a safety issue with loft insulation recently fitted.

The callers try to obtain personal details from residents by asking a series of questions and then attempt to arrange for a representative to visit the resident’s home to discuss further options.

We would urge anyone who receives any type of unsolicited telephone call to act with caution.

Never be intimidated into making a quick decision and always take a moment to ask yourself if the caller is genuine.

Do not provide any personal details to a caller who has contacted you out of the blue.
Trading Standards would advise you not to engage with any cold callers either over the phone or on the doorstep regardless of what they have to tell you. Simply put the phone down or close the door.

If you receive a telephone call that you suspect maybe a scam, please report it to Citizens Advice Consumer Service by calling 0808 223 1133 (English Speaking) or 0808 223 1144 (Welsh Speaking).

Please help protect others from falling victim to this type of scam, by letting your family, friends and neighbours know about this alert.
