Plans to demolish the Greenacres building on Rhosddu Road have now been approved by Wrexham Council’s Executive Board. An Office Accommodation Review found the building was underutilised, prompting a feasibility study to explore its future potential.
Social Care staff previously based at Greenacres have relocated to a permanent office base in the City Centre, leaving the buildings empty and the site ready for redevelopment.
The feasibility study identified the site as ideal for a social housing scheme, due to its close proximity to the city centre.
After two reports were taken to the Executive Board, the plans to demolish the Greenacres building was approved, paving the way for redevelopment. This transformation focuses on regenerating the site to construct new social housing, aiming to provide up to 51 new homes – one of the Council’s largest redevelopment projects to date. This will contribute significantly to the Council’s commitment to addressing the pressing demand for affordable social housing.
Rhosddu Road offers a prime location, near shops and other amenities, which presents a great prospect for those seeking convenient living. The strategic location offers easy access to services such as food stores, pharmacies, and dining facilities, enhancing everyday living.
Demolition will begin early this year, followed by a tender process for a development partner to design and build the new homes, subject to planning permission.
The Cunliffe Centre, an adult day care centre will continue operating from its current site until a suitable alternative site is found.
Councillor David A Bithell, Leader Member for Housing and Climate Change said, “The regeneration of this site is an ideal opportunity to build more social housing in a prime location which is conveniently located near shops and other amenities.
“Demolition work will begin very soon, and we will be having more discussions around the potential buildings that will be situated here.”
