Young people who use Minera Youth Provision were asked ‘if there was funding to help improve the youth provision what you would like us to do?’
Their suggestions were: new games to play inside and out, and they also suggested that heating in the container would help during the colder months and a shelter and lights outside would give them more space to play games or just to spend time with friends.
The young people supported a grant application from the Youth Service Revenue Small Grant Scheme which they were granted monies to provide new resources, including sports equipment, outside games and new board games. Wrexham Youth Service provided heaters for inside the containers and rechargeable lights to use outside and they also secured £1500 for materials to build a shelter to extend the outdoor space.
Coleg Cambria was approached and asked if they would like to support with building the shelter, which they kindly agreed to do. The £1500 managed to pay for the materials needed and Coleg Cambria offered their services for free.
Staff and students worked hard and spent many hours measuring up, planning, and designing the shelter to suit the youth provision needs. Then during lessons in Coleg Cambria supported by staff, the students used their new skills to build the frames. Finally they came back up to the youth provision, they secured the frame to the floors and container, added the roof and finished it off by staining the wood. And it looks great!
Fantastic extended space for the young people of Minera and other areas
Councillor Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education, said, “This was a collaborative project where young people asked for change and then young people supported those changes. This is a perfect example of young people having a voice and improving their communities. There is now a fantastic extended space for the young people from the youth provision to use also benefiting Coedpoeth Football Teams and their families who we are sure will appreciate a dry place to wait while training is on or watching the games.
“Thank you to everyone involved.”
