Last dash for Sports Awards – don’t miss out!

Wrexham is an area which has produced medal-winning Olympians and Paralympians – and that sporting excellence runs all the way from international sporting stars right down to the professional and amateur level.

And we’ve scores of community sporting groups where that spirit is nurtured, supported by an army of volunteers, trainers, sponsors and coaches – covering sports from football to fencing and from badminton to boxing.

And that’s not to mention some of the dedicated athletes and sportspeople taking part.

With the above in mind, Wrexham Council holds an annual Sports Award, to celebrate the achievements of shining local sports starts, who have gone above and beyond in their hard work for community sporting and athletics groups.

The Wrexham County Borough Council Sports Awards 2018, supported by Active Wrexham, will take place on Friday, February 23, 2018.

We’ve already put out an appeal for nominations – but nominations close on December 15, and we want as many people as possible to put their local sporting heroes forward.

Categories

The categories are:

  • Junior Sports Personality of the Year
  • Sports Personality of the Year
  • Service to Sport Award
  • Coach of the Year
  • Disability Sports Personality of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Organisation of the Year
  • NERS Achievement in Health Award

Cllr Paul Rogers, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, with responsibility for Leisure, said: “There’s just a few days left for people to nominate their local sporting hero for the Sports Awards.

“We’ve already had a number of nominations, but it would be a shame if there were those out there who deserved recognition but missed out.

“If you know someone who has worked hard to keep a sports group in peak condition, put the hours in to train themselves or others, or smashed barriers in order to achieve their personal best, please put them forward – there’s plenty of people out there who are worthy of recognition, and we don’t want to miss them!”

To nominate, either e-mail sportsawards@wrexham.gov.uk for a nomination form, or visit the online nomination form here.

Fill-in our questionnaire now, and make sure you have your say on proposed budget-savings.
