Kylie and her husband Pete decided to start their family through adoption, following in the footsteps of Kylie’s grandmother who adopted Kylie’s mum.
“I was dreading the process, the training, and the speaking about my previous traumas that I had overcome. I didn’t want to bring anything back up again, but I just clung onto the fact that at the end of all of this, I was going to be a mum. It wasn’t as much as I had built up in my head, and every form or question I sorted out straight away, I wanted to get it done as quickly as possible.”
It was a year following the first phone call to North Wales Adoption Service when they welcomed their daughter into their home.
“I remember the moment she first called me mum. It took about six weeks. We were playing peekabo and I said, “Where’s mum?” And she just said it, “Mum!” It was just amazing; I’ll never forget that moment.”
Two years after their daughter came home, Kylie and Pete started the process again to adopt a little boy. Kylie said their daughter was “so excited” to have a little brother.
“They are like any other set of siblings, they play together, they love each other, they fight, they hate each other!”
She continued: “It can be hard, both during and after the adoption you will face challenges, but you meet people along the way who are also on a similar journey to you, other adopters and your social workers, people who are there to talk to and not just about adoption. We feel like we are so lucky to have our children. It is so rewarding, I would encourage anyone looking to adopt to just do it, make that phone call, you won’t regret it.”
