A series of successful local businesses supported by Wrexham Council’s Business and Investment Team welcomed Lead Member for Economy, Business and Tourism, Councillor Nigel Williams, on visits to hear first-hand how council-backed business support programmes have helped them establish, grow and invest in their future.
The visit showcased a diverse range of businesses that have benefited from support provided through the Council’s Business and Investment Team, start-up support, business guidance and ongoing mentoring.
Councillor Williams visited Plant-e, located on Charles Street, where owner Eric discussed plans for the future of the business following investment in a laser engraver secured through the Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) Business Grant Programme. The funding has enabled the business to expand its product offering and Eric is now exploring opportunities to relocate to a larger premises as part of his vision to develop a hybrid plant shop and wellbeing café.
The visit then moved to Dead Good Scran at Tŷ Pawb, a family-run smokehouse restaurant owned by Martin and Katie. The business opened in October 2025 after the couple successfully secured support through both the SPF Business Grant Programme and the Business Start-Up Dragons’ Den Programme. Their journey to opening the restaurant is an inspiring one, having overcome significant challenges to realise their ambition of running their own business.
At Sushi Box on Henblas Street, Councillor Williams met owner Prai, who has received support from the Business and Investment Team throughout her business start-up journey. Most recently, Sushi Box secured funding through the Dragons’ Den Start-Up Grant Programme, helping the business continue to establish itself within the city centre.
The visit also included Monty’s in the Butchers Market, where owner Claire recently took over the business and successfully rebranded the stall. Support received through the Dragons’ Den Start-Up Grant Programme has helped the business develop its offer and strengthen its presence within the market.
Finally, Councillor Williams met Maisie, the young entrepreneur behind Wrexham Book Worm. At just 16 years old, Maisie has been supported through the Council’s Business Clinics and wider business support services. Her entrepreneurial achievements have attracted considerable attention, including receiving correspondence from Buckingham Palace recognising her business and community engagement activities. With strong support from her family, Maisie continues to inspire others through her successful business venture.
The businesses visited represent just a small selection of the entrepreneurs and enterprises supported by Wrexham Council’s Business and Investment Team, which continues to work closely with new and existing businesses to encourage growth, investment and innovation across the county borough.
Councillor Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy, Business and Tourism, said:
“I’m delighted that we have such an array of business support services here in Wrexham and that we have so many examples of people who have been able to get their ideas off the ground with the right assistance.
“I’d encourage anyone who is interested in starting a business, has an idea they want to get off the ground, or just wants to have an informal chat to begin with, then to get in touch with the team.”
Andrew Coxill, Business & Investment Team Manager, said:
“It was fantastic to showcase such a diverse group of businesses and entrepreneurs who are helping to shape the future of Wrexham’s economy. From first-time business owners and young entrepreneurs to established companies looking to grow, these businesses demonstrate the positive impact that targeted business support can have. We are proud to work alongside them on their journeys and look forward to supporting their continued success.”
