International Women’s Day takes place on March 8, to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
This year’s theme is #BalanceForBetter, with the aim of discussing issues around gender equality in terms of things like pay and representation.
While the worldwide event takes a look at the broad themes of inclusion, bias and equality, there’ll be plenty of events on the ground locally as well.
There’ll be loads taking place in Wrexham during the day, including a series of talks at the Wrexham Enterprise Hub and Bank Street Social from women working in a wide range of fields, as part of the North Wales International Women’s Day Festival.
Other events during the day include a workshop on encouraging women into construction at Coleg Cambria’s Bersham Road campus, from 8.45am until 11.30am.
Some of our politicians will also be shadowed by young women throughout the day, to give them an idea of what political life is like and some of the work our local representatives have to carry out as party of their day-to-day role.
Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, with responsibility for Equality, said: “I’m very pleased to see that there’s a lot on in Wrexham for International Women’s Day, and I’d highly recommend that anyone interested in some of the discussions take part and attend the events on offer.
“I’d also like to thank all of the young women who will be shadowing some of our politicians throughout the day – I’m sure it’ll be a very insightful and useful exercise for them.”
