Work at Ysgol yr Hafod is due to be completed by 31st August in readiness for school starting back on 5th September.
The Victorian frontage of the school has been retained, with the inside tastefully modernised incorporating new and older features of the existing school.
Upon completion the 21st Century schools project supported by circa £6m funding from Welsh Government and Wrexham County Borough Council will see all year groups educated at the Bangor road site.
The works included additional grant funding support used to purchase the school house, which will form part of early years entitlement. Little Miners and the After School Club will also be accommodated in the building which will be beneficial to the school and the local community.
At the end of term the school will vacate the Foundation Phase Site, which will also include preparations for the removal of the temporary portacabins. The Foundation Phase Site in Melyd Avenue will then return to the Local Authority at Wrexham Council.
Additional parking at Bangor Road was part of the planning conditions which supports parents and the community to try and address parking demand concerns. We will also be encouraging parents to walk to school as part of our commitment to active travel plans.
The site will have three entrances which are: Bangor Road, High Street and the Moreton Estate. The school will give more detail nearer the time.
An open day will be arranged when the site has been handed back, so that the community can come and see the new facilities, this is likely to be after the school opens in September.
Councillor David Bithell, Chair of Governors at Ysgol Yr Hafod said: “I’m really pleased with how the Strategic Project Group over the past 18 months have overseen the work ensuring that the project was delivered on time and that the new facilities are fantastic both inside and out. “I know the school staff are extremely proud and excited to have such a modern facility that also includes a new multi games facility. “The local community will be very proud of their new school”
Headteacher, Mrs Alison Heale said: “I’d like to extend a huge thank you to our parents and guardians, residents and the local community for their patience during the construction of the site and with the additional parking pressures at the Foundation Phase Site. The changes and improvements have been transformational and I look forward with excitement to welcoming all our students back in September.”
Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for education at Wrexham Council said: “It’s fantastic to see the years of planning come to fruition as we continue to invest in improving our school buildings throughout Wrexham. I’m extremely pleased with the high standard of work at the school and am confident that the school will serve the Johnstown community well for many years to come.
