Wrexham Council’s Housing Department have now completed three major improvements to their Sheltered Housing stock. The latest to be completed is Maes y Capel in Coedpoeth.
Maes y Capel will supply 18 newly refurbished homes for returning and new contract holders.
The refurbishment provides modernised independent living for people aged over 60.
Maes y Capel follows the success of previous refurbishments which have been completed in Llay and Rhos, in collaboration with Read Construction.
Similarly to the previous works the aim of this refurbishment was to improve the size and accessibility of the apartments to provide maximum comfort, while still providing warm and energy efficient homes. To do so, triple glazed windows and air source heat pumps have been installed.
The work has prioritised creating a communal area which is accessible for all contract holders to use as a space to socialise with one another, which aims to assist with the contract holder’s well-being and lower loneliness.
Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Housing and Climate Change said, “We are pleased to have completed another refurbishment on our Sheltered Housing stock.
“The completion of Maes y Capel will provide the returning and new contract holders with a newly refurbished home which will encourage independent living alongside a close community spirit.
“We look forward to continuing to progress with our next refurbishment at Wisteria Court and will continue to update you throughout the process.”
Councillor Krista Childs for Coedpoeth added, “Maes y Capel is looking absolutely transformed from the exterior of the building after the refurbishments by Read Construction, and I am really looking forward to seeing how the improvements have changed inside of the building very soon.
“I know that many residents are also excited about the new improvements to their accommodation which will make this facility a much more comfortable environment.”
Councillor Anthony Wedlake for Coedpoeth also added, “I, like most Coedpoeth residents, have watched the refurbishment with interest. Now it’s completed, we can admire it with pride.
“Having visited a previously refurbished home in Rhos, I can assure residents that it looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside. I wish the returning residents and new residents every happiness in their new home.”
What is next for the Sheltered Housing Refurbishment project?
While work has been progressing on Maes y Capel, work has also started on another refurbishment at Wisteria Court.
Work at Wisteria Court is continuing to progress well. Interior work is moving forward, as the apartments have been formed and plastered ready for the next stages. The exterior of the building is developing to plan, and we look forward to continuing this project.
Previously Wisteria Court was a building that was built in the early 1980s, holding 26 apartments. Therefore, Wrexham Council aim to adapt this old building into a modern and welcoming environment.
