Residents across Wrexham are being urged to remain vigilant for rogue traders who may seek to exploit homeowners following the recent severe weather associated with Storm Austen.
Wrexham Trading Standards is warning residents that unscrupulous individuals may target households, particularly those where roofs, gutters, chimneys or other parts of a property may have been affected by the storm. Rogue traders often cold call at homes claiming they have spotted damage and may pressure homeowners into agreeing to immediate repairs that are unnecessary, poor quality, or significantly overpriced.
These traders commonly use high-pressure sales tactics, suggesting that urgent action is needed to prevent further damage. In some cases, householders may be told that a roof is unsafe or that repairs must be carried out immediately. Residents should be aware that legitimate contractors will understand the need for customers to seek independent advice and will not pressure them into making on-the-spot decisions.
Key advice for consumers:
- Be cautious of anyone who cold calls at your door offering roofing or building work.
- Do not feel pressured into agreeing to work immediately.
- Obtain at least two or three quotations from reputable traders before making a decision.
- Ask for references and check online reviews where possible.
- Never hand over large sums of money upfront.
- Ensure you receive written quotations and details of any proposed work.
- Take time to consider your options and discuss any concerns with family, friends, or trusted advisers.
- Contact your insurer before commissioning repairs if storm damage is suspected.
Councillor Hugh Jones Lead Member for Strategic Planning and Public Protection said:
“Unfortunately, periods following severe weather often present opportunities for rogue traders to take advantage of worried homeowners. We would urge residents not to be rushed into making decisions on their doorstep.
“If someone cold calls offering roofing repairs or claiming that urgent work is required, take a step back, seek independent advice, and obtain quotations from reputable local businesses before agreeing to anything.
“Legitimate traders will not object to you obtaining a second opinion.
“If a trader is pressuring you to make an immediate decision, that should be treated as a warning sign.”
Particular care should be taken by older or vulnerable residents who may feel pressured by persistent sales tactics. Family members, friends and neighbours are encouraged to check on those who may be at greater risk of becoming victims of doorstep crime.
Anyone who has concerns about a trader or who believes they have been targeted by a rogue trader should report the matter to Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133, who will refer appropriate cases to Trading Standards.
