Like any large organisation, Wrexham Council has to manage a lot of ‘risks’.
Because if certain things go pear-shaped, they could have a big impact on our services…and on our customers.
So we need to make sure we know what the major risks are, and that we’re doing enough to prevent or minimise their impact.
But how can we do that?
Up for discussion on September 27
Our Audit Committee will meet this Thursday, September 27 to look at the main risks we’re facing, what we’re doing to manage them, and if we’re doing those things well.
Jerry O’Keeffe chairs the committee. He isn’t a councillor or an employee, but an independent member of the public.
He says: “Councils are complex organisations which affect us all, and there are lots of risks that could impact on the services they provide – services that we often rely on.
“It’s important the council knows what its risks are, so it can focus on the most important ones, and make sure the right controls are in place.
“It’s also essential there is effective auditing to ensure those controls are strong enough.”

The committee’s meetings are open to the public, so why not go along if you get the chance?
The subject might be serious, but the meetings aren’t scary or stuffy.
Mr O’Keeffe says: “They’re conducted in an inclusive style to encourage debate and challenge. Members of the public are encouraged to attend, and we’re always glad to see people taking an interest in our work.
“It’s really important that people can understand and scrutinise what we’re doing to manage risks.”
