As part of Scam Aware month we’re asking you to sign up to our “Public Protection” email alerts so you can stay up to date with all scams, rogue traders or false advertising claims that will try and con you out of your hard earned cash or steal your personal details.

It’s a simple idea but one that could save you, your family, colleagues and friends a lot of heartache and financial loss.

All you have to do is click the link, put in your email address and select “Public Protection” and every time we put out a warning article about scams or cons or any concerns raised by Public Protection that we’re aware of you’ll receive the article via an email. It’s free and could save you a fortune.

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

  • Did you know there were 3.5 million incidents of fraud for the year ending September 2018?
  • 75 is the average age of reported scam victims
  • £4,500 was found to be the average financial loss for those aged between 59-75 year olds
  • Victims of cyber crime fraud are more likely to be aged between 41-60

A lot of us believe that only elderly people are targeted, but we’d be wrong. 🙁 Anyone can be targeted, which means we are all at risk. And there are dozens of scams from investment scams to simpler scams like an email offering you a refund on your council tax that we may just fall for!

STOP, REPORT, TALK is the main message from this year’s campaign and if you are sent an email out of the blue, have a knock on the door with an offer to do some household work such as fixing guttering, receive a phone call offering you a great deal on a property or anything similar remember to STOP, REPORT, TALK

Always remember! If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

STOP, REPORT, TALK

“What do I do if I suspect a scam?”

There are three things you can do:

  1. STOP – Get advice from the Citizens Advice service on 03454 04 05 06 (03454 04 05 05 Cymraeg)
  2. REPORT – Report scams or suspected scams to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at www.actionfraud.police.uk. Action Fraud is the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and internet crime. Remember – if debit cards, online banking or cheques are involved in the scam then your first contact should be your bank or credit card company.
  3. TALK – Tell family, friends, neighbours so they can avoid scams and find out how to protect themselves.

Get the latest info on scams, product recalls and other public protection issues.
