Demand for Welsh-language education is on the up in Wrexham, so this month Wrexham Council’s Executive Board will discuss plans to increase the number of places available.

In his report Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for People – Education, says that he realises that the current demand for Welsh-medium reception places is just about being met, but the demand is projected to grow so we need to plan ahead now.

He said: ‘It is my pleasure to present this report to Executive Board. The opportunity has arisen to address the anticipated increased demand for Welsh-medium primary places using existing school estate stock whilst waiting on approval from the Welsh Government for our submitted 21st Century schools Band B funding bid, which does not begin until April 2019. Once approved, the consultation will go ahead with stakeholders whose views I am sure will help us formulate the best way forward.’

The report outlines a proposal to finalise the amalgamation of Borras Infants and Junior schools by moving all pupils into the current junior site. The infant school site will then be improved and opened as a new Welsh-medium school.

While these works are being carried out, there will be a temporary site for the school located at the old Hafod yr Wern infants’ school site, with the first proposed intake being September 2019 for nursery and reception classes only.

Consultation on these plans is scheduled to take place between 26 September and 7 November.

This new school will increase access and wider choice for those seeking to educate their children through the medium of Welsh.
