You might have heard recent announcements about our Townscape Heritage Scheme, which is set to revitalise a number of historical buildings in Wrexham town centre.
And you might also have heard about its partner-scheme, the Traditional Building Skills programme, which aims to train up a skilled workforce able to take on work in the traditional building skills (pre-1919) sector.
We’ve already held some training events aimed at professionals and those already working in the fields of heritage or construction. And now we have held another event aimed at getting young people into the same field.
On January 24, we held a training day at the Bersham Campus of Coleg Cambria and were joined by a few of our partners involved in the Townscape Heritage Scheme and the Traditional Building Skills programme.
The day provided the opportunity to:
- tour the campus
- speak to construction tutors
- understand the need for skills in heritage construction
- attend talks to explore the subject in more detail
- access potential work and school placements through the Wrexham Townscape Heritage Scheme.
Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Performance and Regeneration, said: ‘There’s a lot of exciting work planned in Wrexham through the Townscape Heritage Scheme, and with the associated Traditional Building Skills programme, this is an excellent opportunity for young people in Wrexham interested in traditional trades.
‘Employers will always be on the lookout for those with extra skills, and the aim of events like these is to show young people how they can find a way into training in the more specialised skills required by employers in the heritage construction sector.
‘For any young people who are looking to go into a trade such as bricklaying or carpentry, but haven’t yet thought about where they want to specialise, this will be a great opportunity for them to take a look at the wider field of skills available.’
