The trip was organised by Maelor’s Physical Education Department to give younger pupils who missed out on the school’s tenth anniversary trip to the United States in 2019 a chance to experience the thrills of skiing in a stunning location.

The incredibly successful trip saw 39 students from Years 9, 10 and 11, along with four members of staff, visit the resort from February 14-21 in what was near-perfect skiing conditions.

Trekking and exploring in the Maligne Canyon

The youngsters spent the first day ice trekking and exploring the frozen waterfalls and glacial rivers in the Maligne Canyon, which is one of Jasper’s most popular and impressive adventures.

5 full days of skiing

The following five days were spent skiing in Jasper’s near-perfect snow and weather conditions.

Around two thirds of the group were complete beginners to skiing but staff noticed a big improvement in the student’s ability as the trip progressed.

Not beginners anymore👍⛷.

Dyfan Williams, Assistant Head of Sixth Form at The Maelor School, said: “The students had a fantastic experience skiing in an amazing location. Skiing is a sporting activity which has many great benefits, but it’s also one that most people won’t get to experience…so it was wonderful to give so many of our students the opportunity to be a part of this trip.”

Simon Ellis, Headteacher at the Maelor School, said: “As a school, we recognise the role sport can play, not just in improving students physical health, but also in assisting mental health, mood, confidence and social skills. A skiing trip is something that everyone involved in looks forward to, as it’s chance to bond and develop your skills in an incredible location.”
