Support from the Wrexham and Flintshire Investment Zone has given another Wrexham-based company the ability to take the steps it needs to ensure it’s future.
Multi-award-winning business Mimica, based in Wrexham, is on a mission to radically reduce unnecessary food waste. ‘Bump’, their patented freshness technology, responds to real storage conditions and gives a clear tactile signal when food or drinks actually spoil, driving a reduction in food waste and increasing sales.
Building on successful work with major industry players across dairy, juice, meat and fish, their focus for 2026 is to scale their production further, taking Bump from a proven concept to a system used across the food industry.
Interest in Bump is growing fast with more than 300 food companies already on their waiting list.
As Mimica grows, they’re investing in their people as much as their production lines. They plan to expand their on-site laboratory into a centre of excellence, bringing food scientists, designers and engineers together to work side by side, building on the people-centred culture that has been a driving force behind Mimica’s success so far. It’s this combination of science, manufacturing and purpose that will get them closer to their vision: becoming the global mark of freshness.
Lawrie Matthews, chief technology and financial officer of Mimica says: “Our production site at the Bryn Business Centre is at the heart of our growth plans, backed by funding from the Flintshire and Wrexham Investment Zone. We’re investing in the equipment that turns R&D into real output, and the automation to run it at volume, creating skilled manufacturing and R&D jobs in North Wales along the way. We believe Wales should be a place that makes things, not just services them, and we’re proud to back that ambition while valuing our resources.”
The project was supported by Wrexham Council’s investment zone and business and investment team, who worked closely with the company to access funding through the Investment Zone Programme SME Manufacturing Grant.
Councillor Nigel Williams, lead member for economy, business and tourism at Wrexham Council, said: “My visit to Mimica was really interesting and it was great to see a Wrexham business leading the way in such an important issue as reducing food waste. Here is an example of another Wrexham company taking advantage of the Wrexham and Flintshire Investment Zone Grant to ensure their future viability and to invest in their all-important staff. I look forward to seeing Bump come to market.”

The Wrexham and Flintshire Investment Zone Programme supports businesses to invest, grow and innovate, helping to create jobs, boost productivity and strengthen the advanced manufacturing sector across the region.
