When it meets on Tuesday Executive Board will be asked to agree that Wrexham becomes a member of the Key Cities Group.

The Key Cities Group was formed in 2013 and now represents the interests of 21 cities, towns and major urban areas in England and Wales. The Group is committed to working with the UK Government and other national and regional stakeholders to open up opportunities for inclusive, regional growth and to boost the economic prosperity of the UK overall.

The invitation to join the group came from the Chair of the Key Cities Group, Cllr John Merry, Deputy Mayor of Salford City, and it recognises Wrexham’s status as a major urban area at the heart of North Wales’ economic and social ambitions.

Membership of the Group includes Salford, Preston, Sunderland and Blackpool in the north of England and Newport in south Wales.

Membership of the Key Cities Group would make a clear statement about Wrexham’s aspirations for the local economy and would increase its ability to:

  • Put our case for investment in Wrexham and its town centre to UK and Welsh Governments.
  • Further develop our thinking and learn from others about development of the urban and surrounding areas of Wrexham.
  • Ensure there is an argument put forward to UK and Welsh Government about investment in smaller cities and towns and not just regional centres eg London, Cardiff and South West Wales.
  • Learn quickly from others about how we support the economy post Covid 19.

The Leader of the Council will present the report on Tuesday 8 December. You will be able to watch the meeting live on our webcast from 10am. (https://wrexham.public-i.tv/core/portal/home)
