Keep Wrexham Litter Free

Following this morning’s Executive Board a strong message has gone out to Keep Wrexham Litter Free to combat increasing concerns from residents about fly-tipping and litter.

We’ll be working with volunteer groups and Caru Cymru to work across the county borough not only to litter pick but to identify hot-spots where fly tipping is regularly taking place and take positive action.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “It’s clear from listening to residents that they’re fed up of irresponsible people discarding their litter and household waste and ruining the environment for us all.

“It’s time to take action and we’ll now be issuing Fixed Penalty Notices to anyone who isn’t getting rid of their rubbish responsibly. This includes paying a “man in a van” type of service that doesn’t have a Waste Carrier’s License and anyone who is caught fly-tipping or littering anywhere in the county borough.”

“The Household Recycling Centres are all open and all excess waste should be taken to one of them.”

As well as being unsightly and spoiling our enjoyment of our towns and countryside, litter – particularly plastic litter and fly-tipping – impacts our health and well-being, and threatens Wales’ wildlife and habitats.

It also means that time and resources are used up to clean up and dispose of the waste.

There’s been a significant increase in fly-tipping over the last 12 months. (e.g. figures for April – Sept 2019 were 491 reports to contact centre, whereas the same period for 2020 was 877 reports).

The annual clean-up of fly-tipping incidents in Wales costs nearly £2 million. Property prices can be reduced in fly-tipping hot spots as the area is seen to be less attractive.

We’ll bring you more on what we’re doing to tackle offenders soon.
