Continuing our partnership with Flintshire County Council, we’re investigating the possibility of creating a flagship Specialist Children’s Assessment Centre to meet the care and support needs of children and young people in the area.
The scoping project is being funded entirely by Welsh Government’s Housing with Care Fund (HCF), and we’re working closely with Flintshire on a centre which could deliver multiple services on one site, giving extra care and support to families.
Huge opportunities for children and families
Children and their families across Wrexham and Flintshire would be in line to gain from the innovative project, with potential benefits including:
- Increasing our ability to offer the right kind of care and support for children and young people with complex needs, closer to their home
- Offering an increased number of residential care services for children with complex needs
- Having a flexible model service of delivery, which is more responsive to the individual needs of children and young people
- Delivering support that is not-for-profit
- Decreasing the use of out of county placements for children and young people
“Incredible potential”
Cllr Rob Walsh, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Children’s and Family Services said: “This is a project with incredible potential. It’s an opportunity to deliver the only assessment centre of its kind in the region, offering therapeutic and educational assessments alongside short-term residential support. This would help us to properly address the needs and complexities of children, in their own community.”
Cllr Christine Jones, Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Services and Wellbeing, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to explore a new way of supporting children and young people with complex needs across Flintshire and Wrexham. Bringing key services together will help to ensure children receive the care, support and assessments they need closer to home.”
