20mph update – find out which roads will be exempt

On September 17 this year, the default national speed limit on residential roads and busy pedestrian streets in Wales will change from 30mph to 20mph.

This new Welsh Government legislation will not apply a blanket speed limit on all roads, it will reduce the speed limit on restricted roads to 20mph.

When this was announced, local council’s were given a list of criteria and an opportunity to look at roads within their county to see if any roads were suitable to be made exempt from the change.

In the next few weeks, you will be able to voice any objections to these exemptions as part of a 21-day consultation period. Keep checking back to this blog and Wrexham Council’s social media pages to find out when the consultation begins.

Wrexham Council have looked at the criteria and put together a list of roads that would be exempt. You are now able to see which roads they are on the Welsh Government’s DataMapWales website.

You don’t need to log in to the site to use it and you will be able to see those roads that will have an exemption order (so they will be 30mph roads from September 17), roads that are currently 30mph by Order and are being dropped to 20mph, and those roads that are currently 30mph and will remain 30mph.

Cllr Hugh Jones, lead member for environment, said: “This is a change that will affect everyone in the county borough, so I encourage you to take a look at the Welsh Government’s website to see if there are any exemptions to roads that you use. We have been told that the consultation period is imminent and we will let you know when it is open for your comments.”
