Start your Summer Holidays discovering the hidden gems in your local country park during Wales Nature Week.

Wales Nature Week features nature walks, talks and activity days taking place throughout Wales, organised by a range of organisations and individuals coming together to showcase the wonders of Welsh nature.

Running between 22-30 July, the theme of this year’s Wales Nature Week is ‘Celebrating Nature’s Treasures.’

So what better way to kick start the summer than to get outdoors exploring some of our country parks and open spaces, taking in our rich landscapes, cherished habitats, floral rarities and miniature heroes.

The following events have been organised by our Open Spaces and Country Park Ranger team:

22 July 1-3pm Nature is fun! at Alyn Waters Country Park (Gwersyllt side): Get outdoors with Wrexham Council and discover the different ways you can have fun in nature whatever the weather. Meet at the visitor centre.

26 July 10-12pm Elusive Orchids at Alyn Waters Country Park (Llay side car park)

Alyn Waters offers a unique habitat for a range of orchid species including some real rarities such as the Dune Helleborine. Join the park rangers on a guided walk around the park learning more about these fabulous flowers.

30 July 1-3pm The Honey Thief Mystery at Acton Park, (by the playground off Herbert Jennings Avenue, Wrexham, LL12 7YG). The bees need your help! Can you solve which insect has stolen honey from their hive? Follow the trail around the park and become an insect detective as you attempt to solve the biggest honey heist Acton Park has ever seen!” Trail duration: 30-40mins approx.

Cllr Hugh Jones said “We have a superb natural heritage from the rich Dee Valley to the upland areas of the Berwyn and Ruabon Mountains and everything in between! We are eager to celebrate the outdoors and encourage people to discover nature on their doorstep, as well as protect habitats for future generations especially in urban areas.”

Sean McHugh of Wales Biodiversity Partnership said: “Every year we choose a theme and this year we are encouraging people to discover the fantastic species and habitats in Wales under our theme: Celebrating Nature’s Treasures. We cherish and rejoice in the wonder of the natural world, from the seemingly humble to the truly expansive; from the iridescent beauty of a starling’s plumage; taking in the majesty of the Welsh landscape or enjoying nature in the local park.

Large and small, these are our treasures, our natural heritage, inherited by each generation to discover, and it is vital that we celebrate and protect nature now and, in the future”.

Wales Nature Week 2023

Wales Nature Week is coordinated by Wales Biodiversity Partnership. Wales Biodiversity Partnership brings together key players from the public, private and voluntary sectors to promote and monitor biodiversity and ecosystem action in Wales.
