Each year, Carers Wales, as part of Carers UK carries out a survey of carers to understand the state of caring. This year, the survey has shown that unpaid carers are struggling even more with their finances.

Some of the findings were that 76% of unpaid carers receiving carer’s allowance are struggling with cost-of-living pressures, ‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌48% are cutting back on essentials, including food and heating, and 49% said they were struggling to make ends meet. More of detail on the report can be found on the Carers UK website.

“We’ve tried to make it easier for carers to get the help they need”

Cllr John Pritchard, Lead Member for Adult Social Care said: “The Carers Wales survey has shown how difficult it can be for unpaid carers in Wales. We know from the most recent census date that we have over 13,000 unpaid carers in Wrexham and we’ve tried to make it easier for carers to get the help they need. We’re continuing to improve services for unpaid carers in Wrexham, and we want to do everything we can to make our carers aware of the information, support and respite options that are available to them.”

What support is available?

In Wrexham adult unpaid carers can access support, information and advice from NEWCIS, and young carers can access support through WCD Young Carers.

NEWCIS

NEWCIS (North East Wales Carers Information Service) run groups, offer advice, information and support and undertake carer needs assessments (what matters conversations) on behalf of Wrexham Council.

It has a carers centre based at 3A Edison Court, Wrexham Technology Park, LL13 7YT (just behind the Ramada Hotel).

If you provide unpaid care to a family member friend or neighbour you can contact NEWCIS to find out about the different types of support that is available.

WCD Young Carers

WCD Young Carers (pronounced Wicked Young Carers) is part of the Credu family and is commissioned by Wrexham Council as well as the Betsi Cadwalader University Health Board, and it puts young carers and their families at the heart of everything it does.

If you’re a young carer who provides unpaid care to a family member friend or neighbour you can get in touch with WCD Young Carers to find out about the support that is available.

Help with finances

Citizens Advice offer financial help and advice to everyone, not just unpaid carers.

Wrexham Citizens Advice regularly has drop in sessions across Wrexham, or you can contact the service through its website or by calling 0300 330 1178.
