Retail and commercial property owners are being invited to apply for a new grant designed to help re-energise Wrexham city centre.

Wrexham Council will use £220k of Transforming Towns funding to offer grants of up to £50k to enhance building frontages and bring vacant commercial floor space back into use.

Transforming Towns is a Welsh Government initiative designed to help regenerate town centres, ensuring they continue to play a key role in local economies and communities.

Who can apply?

Grants are available to retail and commercial property owners with premises in the city centre.

Applications are also welcome from leaseholders with seven years or more remaining on their tenancy and written consent from their landlord to carry out the proposed improvements.

What can the funding be used for?

These money can be used to help fund external works to building frontages, including:

  • Shopfronts
  • Improved display windows
  • Signage improvements
  • Windows and doors
  • Roofs and chimneys
  • Rendering and structural works

Internal works – and improvements to energy efficiency (e.g. enhanced insulation) – may also be eligible alongside a comprehensive package of external improvements.

Works must be complete by February 28, 2025

You can find more information, including how to apply, on Wrexham Council’s website. Transforming Towns Property Development Grant | Wrexham County Borough Council

Councillor Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy, said: “This is an incredibly exciting time for Wrexham, and these grants will help revitalise and enhance city centre properties.

“I would encourage eligible owners and leaseholders to apply for this funding, and help breathe new life into their premises.

“Wrexham is Wales’ newest city, and it’s important we have a vibrant and exciting city centre.”

Cabinet Secretary for Housing, Local Government and Planning, Julie James, said: “Through our Transforming Towns programme, we have provided millions of pounds worth of funding to Wrexham County Borough Council to revitalise the city centre, supporting vibrancy and creating employment opportunities.

“This initiative in Wrexham will see an improved town centre offer and bring disused buildings in the heart of the community back into productive use, both key elements of our regeneration programmes.

“I look forward to seeing how this latest investment will benefit the community and help stimulate the local economy.”
