Residents across Wrexham are being invited to have their say on the future of Wrexham County Borough’s waste and recycling services as a new public consultation opens today.
A new waste strategy is being developed for Wrexham, setting out how we can continue to improve waste and recycling services, increase recycling and make sure the service meets the needs of residents in the years ahead.
The consultation is open from Thursday, 8 October until Thursday, 22 October, and we want to hear from as many residents as possible.
The consultation comes as a number of improvements to Wrexham’s waste and recycling services are already being introduced or developed.
These include:
- Free garden waste collections proposed from April 1, 2027, subject to approval.
- Reduced-cost bulky waste collections, helping residents dispose of larger household items and supporting efforts to reduce fly-tipping.
- New larger, weighted recycling sacks to provide more capacity for paper and cardboard and help prevent bags from blowing away.
- More materials collected from the kerbside, including household batteries.
- Fortnightly garden waste collections throughout the year, apart from Christmas and the New Year period.
- Bank holiday collections, helping provide a more consistent service and reduce disruption for residents.
The wider programme also includes investment in replacement refuse and recycling vehicles, new route-management technology and additional measures to improve the reliability and efficiency of collections.
The published improvement programme also includes extra food-waste containers and collection of additional materials such as Tetra-Pak cartons.
Wrexham’s household recycling rate increased from 60.6% in 2023/24 to 65.1% in 2024/25, but further progress is needed to meet Wales’ statutory recycling target of 70%.
Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment said, “We want residents to be part of the conversation about the future of waste and recycling in Wrexham.
We’ve already started making improvements to the service, but our new waste strategy needs to look further ahead and set out how we continue to improve recycling, reliability and the service we provide to residents.
This consultation is an opportunity for people across the county borough to tell us about their experiences, what matters to them and where they think we can improve.
Please take a few minutes and have your say.”
Feedback received through the consultation will be considered as the final waste strategy is finalised.
Have your say
The consultation is open from October 8 to October 22, 2026.
