HMS Dragon crew Wrexham visit

Last month Wrexham welcomed some of the crew from HMS Dragon, for the first time since we became officially affiliated with the Royal Navy warship.

The ship is the first since the Second World War to be affiliated with Wrexham, and the partnership was sealed at a ceremony in Portsmouth back in April.

The ship is one of the Royal Navy’s advanced Type 45 air defence destroyers, and is instantly recognisable with her roaring Welsh Dragons emblazoned across her bows.

Some of the crew visited the city for the first time on June 6, the eightieth anniversary of D-Day – when Allied troops landed in Normandy and began the liberation of Western Europe.

The crew members were given a reception at the Guildhall, before taking part in the D-Day service at St Giles and the parade through the city centre, as well as the wreath laying at Bodhyfryd.

Councillor Beverley Parry-Jones, Wrexham Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “It was a great honour to be part of the team who welcomed the crew from HMS Dragon to Wrexham, on behalf of the people of Wrexham. “The day was especially poignant being on the special D-Day Anniversary.

“I look forward to future events where we can mark and celebrate our wonderful partnership. We look forward to welcome the crew back to Wrexham in the future.”
