The Housing Support Grant also known as ‘HSG’ is an early intervention revenue grant program funded by the Welsh Government.

It helps to support activities which aim to prevent people from becoming homeless, as well as enabling them to stabilise their housing situation when they find themselves in crisis. It also supports people who find themselves homeless to find and keep accommodation.

There is a dedicated team within the Housing Department that work on the Housing Support Grant through careful planning and commissioning of services that suit the every changing needs of the people of Wrexham who find themselves homeless or facing homelessness.

The Team work hard to ensure that Wrexham Council are fully compliant with various legislation and guidance.

A day in the life of a member of the team can consist of researching, gathering and analysing of data to help identify service gaps and develop the commissioning priorities of Wrexham.

The Team also work closely with many providers in Wrexham to ensure that clients get the help and support that they need to maintain their housing.

Welsh Government allocates a ‘Housing Support Grant” to local authorities in Wales in order to support a range of projects including preventing homelessness and stabilising housing situations.

The Housing Support Grant amount that is awarded to Wrexham Council annually currently funds or partially funds over 30 projects within Wrexham to help people who find themselves in crisis.

The types of projects that are funded range in variety, from supported accommodation, outreach and floating support, drug and alcohol misuse, domestic violence support and support for people who may be facing mental health issues.

In conjunction with the Housing Support Grant and Development Team there is the Gateway Team who work hard to offer support to those who are homeless or present as homeless.

Housing Support Grant team have dealt with a number of cases across their work and can vary case by case.

The support provided can vary daily and the extent of support needed can depend on the individual. The team have supported people with alcohol misuse, drug abuse, struggling financially, and much more.

Councillor David A Bithell Lead Member for Housing and Climate Change said, “Supporting the people in Wrexham to maintain or seek Housing is a priority for our Housing Department. It is important that we are on hand to support those in need throughout the process, and our Housing Support Team provide an essential service”
