Watch: When did you find out you were a young carer?

Following on from Carers Rights Day, we asked young carers in Wrexham when and how they found out they were a young carer.

WCD Young Carers believe all young carers are amazing and remind them of this if they forget. Their bespoke support includes fortnightly respite clubs for different age groups, trips and activities in the school holidays, one-to-one support during tough times, advocacy as well as awareness raising in schools/colleges and the local community.

You can find further information on the WCD Young Carers website.

Transcript

Young carer 1: It was two years ago. So, I got told by my school that they thought I was a young carer and they put me through to Leanne.

Leanne came into school and did an introduction meeting with me and then it’s gone from maybe seeing her once a week to seeing her three or four times a week, volunteering and just helping out as much as I can, and discovering new young carers.

Young carer 2: I don’t really remember because it was around ten year ago now. As soon as I turn 18 it will be just about ten years.

But I just remember going to groups for the first time, but I never really knew that I was a young carer, or that’s why I was going.

I just knew that I was going to a fun group this week, but as I got older that’s when I kind of realised that I was a young carer as I saw the difference in what I had to do compared to what other people around me had to do.

And the maturity level as well, I think I’ve always felt a bit more mature than most people my age.
