Wrexham residents – your food and garden waste is helping build a greener future, right here at home.

As part of a 25 year partnership between Wrexham Council and FCC Environment, the Wrexham Recycling Park has been a cornerstone of the borough’s waste and sustainability strategy for over a decade.

Built in 2009 on Wrexham Industrial Estate, this facility was the first of its kind in Wales created through a Private Finance Initiative (PFI), combining public ambition with private expertise to keep more waste out of landfill.

Today, we’re excited to share that the site’s In-Vessel Composting (IVC) facility has had a major upgrade – bringing in the latest technology to process your green and food waste more safely, efficiently, and cleanly than ever before. If you put garden waste or food scraps in your recycling bin, this is where it ends up – and it’s being put to great use.

The upgraded facility includes a new process equipment and screening system to better prepare the material for composting, along with a brand-new picking cabin. This cabin allows staff to remove plastics, metals, and other unwanted materials before composting starts, helping create a much cleaner final product.

So, what does this mean for you?

First, it means your efforts to separate food and garden waste are making a bigger impact- supporting a local facility that turns everyday rubbish into high-quality compost.

Second, that compost comes full circle. Once it’s fully processed and matured, it’s made available to residents like you through local recycling centres, free of charge – perfect for gardens, allotments, and community green spaces!

Between April 2024 and March 2025, the site processed more than 11,000 tonnes of green and food waste, showing just how much of a difference your recycling is making. This investment also supports Wrexham’s goals to reduce landfill use, lower carbon emissions, and keep our borough clean and green.

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Environment, said: “The upgrade is fantastic, and it was a pleasure to go and see the improved facilities in person. We want to show our residents that their garden and food waste is being used in the best possible way, and hopefully this will encourage even more people to recycle with us.”

Garry Smith, General Manager at FCC Environment, said: “Wrexham Council, with FCC Environment, has invested in the latest state-of-the-art technology to ensure that our composting facility continues to meet the highest operational standards. This upgrade strengthens our commitment to delivering a cleaner, greener Wrexham – turning household waste into a resource the community can be proud of.”

So next time you put your peelings and cuttings in your food caddy, or leaves in the green bin – know that you’re playing a part in Wrexham’s journey towards a more sustainable future. Together, we’re closing the loop and giving back to the earth, one compost bag at a time.
