Wrexham Council Continues Collaboration with Solar Windows LTD on Major Windows and Doors Initiative
Wrexham Council’s windows and doors programme is a key part of its wider commitment to delivering homes that meet the Welsh Housing Quality Standard and contribute to the decarbonisation of the housing stock.
Although it is a long-term programme, it recognises the value of installing triple‑glazed windows and composite doors, which significantly improves both the thermal efficiency and security of homes.
As of the 10th April, 1723 properties across the Borough have received new installations via the programme.
All windows and doors are supplied by Solar Windows LTD, who have worked closely with us to guarantee the use of high‑quality, decarbonisation‑focused products.
The process includes sending the old windows to ‘REHAU’s recycling plant in Runcorn where they are first processed into chip, before being transferred to their facility in Blaenau Ffestinog to be melted down in preparation to be reused in the production of new PVCU window profiles. REHAU are an established company who are recognised for their innovative, energy‑efficient methods in this field.
Profile orders supplied by REHAU’s Blaenau factory include a proportion of recycled material, likely sourced in part from Wrexham’s post-consumer PVC window waste. Solar Windows LTD then manufacture the new windows and doors at their Caerphilly facility, helping to close the product lifecycle by returning recycled PVCU products to Wrexham’s housing stock as a high-performance triple-glazed system.
This circular approach strengthens collaboration with Welsh industry and demonstrates a shared commitment to retaining investment and economic benefit within Wales.
Solar Windows LTD Community Benefit
As part of the Council’s windows and doors contract, Solar Windows LTD have an obligation on them to provide Community Benefit, which is based on their Contract spend with us.
What is community benefit?
The Community Benefits policy aims to broaden the idea of value for money by ensuring that public sector contracts in Wales also deliver social, economic, and environmental benefits—not just the required goods, services, or works.
As part of their Community Benefit, Solar Windows Ltd have chosen to go beyond simply providing education to local students— they will offer hands‑on, interactive learning experiences for Wrexham College students, focusing on window and door recycling, extrusion processes, and the career opportunities within the industry for students who are learning about similar processes.
In collaboration with REHAU, Solar Windows are going to install an interactive wall inside Coleg Cambria which will educate students on Wrexham Council’s ongoing Window Programme.
It will feature real former windows from a Wrexham Council property and will demonstrate how they are broken down, recycled, and transformed into a new window profile product by REHAU and manufactured into window products by Solar Windows Ltd.
A newly manufactured window will be showcased at the end of the interactive wall. In addition, there will be opportunity for the students to also visit the recycling factory in Blaenau Ffestiniog in the near future.
This shows a clear commitment from both Solar Windows and the Council to prioritise decarbonisation, becoming greener, with zero material going to landfill. Recognising how important it is to provide community benefits to inspire and educate young people within Wrexham, Solar Windows LTD are proud to support opportunities that help students understand the industry, develop new skills, and explore future career pathways. Being able to invest directly back into the community in this way is something they are delighted to be part of.
