Wrexham Council recognises that reporting hate crimes and incidents is essential to building a safer, more inclusive community where everyone feels they belong and can live without fear or prejudice.
When people speak up, we can work together to ensure every resident is supported, protected and respected.
Recognising hate crimes
Understanding what counts as a hate crime or incident is the first step towards tackling it. Hate can be motivated by hostility towards someone’s race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or gender identity.
Hate crimes and incidents may include:
- Verbal abuse — name‑calling, insults, offensive jokes.
- Physical attacks — hitting, pushing, or any form of violence.
- Threats of harm — intimidation towards you or someone else.
- Online harassment — cyberbullying, hateful messages or images.
- Damage or theft — targeting property because of someone’s identity.
Recognising these behaviours empowers individuals and communities to respond effectively.
Responding to hate crimes
If you experience or witness a hate crime or incident:
- Ensure your safety — if you’re in immediate danger, call 999.
- For non-emergencies – contact North Wales Police at 101, or report it online.
- Record the details — note descriptions, vehicles, locations and witnesses.
- Report the incident — even if it feels minor, reporting helps protect others.
Why reporting is so important
If you believe you’ve been a victim of hate crime, or if you think you’ve witnessed a hate crime, you can report it to North Wales Police.
Reporting:
- Helps police understand the true scale of hate crime in Wrexham.
- Ensures resources are allocated where they’re needed most.
- Supports prevention work and community safety planning.
- Makes invisible problems visible — and solvable.
When hate goes unreported, it goes unchallenged. Your voice helps shape a safer community for everyone.
Seeking support
Experiencing hate can be emotionally overwhelming. You are not alone. Support is available from organisations such as:
Victim Support
We understand that it’s sometimes difficult to go to the police about hate crime. Victim Support is an independent charity dedicated to supporting people affected by crime and traumatic incidents in England and Wales.
Call the North Wales Local Victim Care Team (Freephone 8am-8pm Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm Sat) on 0300 30 30 159.
You can also call the Victim Support Line (Freephone 24/7) on 0300 3031 982 or use the online report form.
A community united against hate
At the heart of this work is a shared belief in a Wrexham that is safe, inclusive and respectful for all.
