Keep Wales Tidy are back with their Welsh Government supported summer litter campaign ‘Make Memories, Not Mess’ as new data reveals the shocking amount of litter left behind on beaches and in parks.
Surveys carried out by Keep Wales Tidy found that of the areas they surveyed 79.4% of them had sweets and wrappers on, with drinks litter close behind at 72.6%.
With the summer in full swing and more people out enjoying the outdoors over the next few weeks the public are being asked to behave responsibly and take their litter home with them.
In Wrexham, the clear up of areas like beaches and parks costs an estimated £1.5m each summer.
Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment said, “Wrexham has many wonderful parks and green spaces for people to enjoy, particularly during the summer months.
We ask everyone to play their part by taking their litter home and disposing of it responsibly, helping to keep these places clean, safe and welcoming for others.”
Keep Wales Tidy Chief Executive Owen Derbyshire said:
“These figures are yet again deeply disappointing. Wales is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches, parks and green spaces anywhere in the world, and we all have a responsibility to look after them.”
He continued.
“As more people head outdoors to enjoy the warmer weather, it’s vital that we leave these places exactly as we found them. Littering is completely avoidable. If a bin is full, take your rubbish home and dispose of it responsibly. It’s a simple action, but one that makes a huge difference.”
