Residents in Wrexham are being advised not to attend unauthorised bonfire events and to consider attending organised displays instead.
Unauthorised bonfires may not have the same safety measures in place as organised events, such as appropriate crowd management, emergency access or controls around what materials are being burned.
Large fires can become unpredictable, and there may also be risks from smoke, debris, unsuitable materials being added to the fire and large numbers of people gathering in one area.
Residents are therefore encouraged to think carefully before attending an unauthorised event and choose an organised bonfire or fireworks display instead, where appropriate safety arrangements are in place.
Councillor Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Strategic Planning and Public Protection said, “We want everyone to be able to enjoy Bonfire Night safely.
Unauthorised bonfires can present additional risks because they may not have the safety measures, planning or emergency arrangements that are in place at organised events.
They can also pose a danger to animals and wildlife. Pets and livestock can be frightened or distressed by fireworks and loud noises, while wildlife may seek shelter in piles of wood and other materials intended for bonfires.
We would strongly advise residents to consider attending an organised display instead, where appropriate safety measures are in place, and to think carefully about the risks before attending an unauthorised event.”
Adrian Owen, Prevention Watch Manager for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said, “Bonfire Night is a time for people to come together and enjoy the celebrations, but safety must come first. Unauthorised bonfires can quickly get out of control and create serious risks to people, property and the surrounding area.
Large, unmanaged fires can involve unstable structures, hazardous materials and the unsafe use of fireworks. Without proper crowd and traffic management, these events can also put members of the public and emergency responders at risk.
Every incident we attend takes valuable resources away from other emergencies where people may need our help. We are therefore urging people not to attend unauthorised bonfires and to attend organised displays where appropriate safety measures and trained staff are in place.
Please enjoy Bonfire Night responsibly and help us keep your family, your community and our firefighters safe.”
Residents are also encouraged to be considerate of their local community during the bonfire period and to report any immediate safety concerns.
Further information about bonfire and firework safety will be shared in the run-up to Bonfire Night.
