Pupils at All Saints’ VA Primary School in Gresford have been putting their school values into action, raising an incredible £3,000 through two community fundraising events supporting Macmillan Cancer Support and the Terry Fox Foundation.

The school recently held a Macmillan Coffee Morning, bringing pupils, families, staff and members of the wider school community together to enjoy refreshments and raise money for an important cause. The event raised approximately £1,300 for Macmillan.

The school also took part in a Terry Fox – Marathon of Hope inspired run, with children from Nursery through to Year 6 taking part. The event was designed to be truly inclusive, with every child encouraged to participate in a way that was right for them. Together, the pupils raised an impressive £2,307.87 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

The Terry Fox story has been an important part of learning across the school in recent weeks. Pupils have explored the remarkable story of Terry Fox and his determination to make a difference to the lives of others. Older pupils also have a personal connection to the story, having heard Terry’s story retold by his brother, Fred Fox, when he visited All Saints’ last year.

The fundraising events provided pupils with an opportunity to turn their learning into action and demonstrate the school’s values of Respect, Friendship and Care. From the youngest children taking part in the run to older pupils helping to organise and support the events, the whole school community came together with a shared purpose.

Through their involvement, pupils are developing as ethical, informed citizens, learning about important issues, respecting diversity and considering how they can contribute to their community and the wider world. At the same time, the inclusive run promoted the development of healthy, confident individuals, encouraging pupils to be active, build positive relationships and recognise the importance of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Headteacher, Mr Richard Hatwood said, “We are incredibly proud of our pupils and the way they have embraced both of these fundraising events. They have shown such enthusiasm, kindness and determination, and have demonstrated beautifully what it means to live out our school values of Respect, Friendship and Care.”

Deputy headteacher, Miss Sarah Jones explained, “It has been particularly pleasing to see every child involved in the Terry Fox run, regardless of age or ability.

“The children have learnt about Terry Fox’s inspirational story and then used their learning to make a positive difference themselves. We are also extremely grateful to our community for their generosity and support.”

The school would like to extend its huge thanks to all the pupils, parents, staff and members of the wider community who supported the events, donated, baked, ran, volunteered and helped make the fundraising such a success.

Together, the All Saints’ community has shown that small acts of kindness, when brought together, can make a very big difference.
