Guest article from Betterpoints app

This November, we’re challenging you to get out and discover more of what’s on your doorstep.

Why Go Local?

Research has linked stronger connections within neighbourhoods with better wellbeing, while local places give us opportunities to meet people, see familiar faces and feel part of a community.

Our local shops and high streets have an important role to play too. Research from University College London highlights that high streets have traditionally been much more than places to shop. They are also social, communal and leisure spaces that can contribute to health and wellbeing.

That might be a café where someone knows your order, the independent shop that has all the good last-minute gifts, a library, market, park or simply a familiar place where you regularly bump into people you know.

Four weeks. Four ways to Go Local.

Each week we’ll explore a different theme:

  • Love it – What do you love most about your local area?
  • Explore it – Tell us about something new you discovered this week whilst exploring your local area.
  • Support it – Is there a local business or charity where you’d like to be able to spend/donate your BetterPoints?
  • Enjoy it – What did you enjoy most about a local journey you made this month?

We’ll ask you a simple question each week so you can share your experiences and help us understand what makes local journeys worthwhile.

Win BetterPoints!

There are loads of BetterPoints up for grabs throughout November:

  • 300 daily prize winners – we’ll give away 10 prizes of 1,000 BetterPoints every day.
  • 60 winners – Answer our weekly Go Local question and you could be one of 15 weekly winners of 2,500 BetterPoints.
  • Go Local Star – one standout response to the Go Local questions will receive 20,000 BetterPoints.

How to take part

  • Simply record your walking, wheeling, running or cycling journeys in the BetterPoints app.
  • Take note of the little things that you normally overlook. Visit somewhere familiar, discover somewhere new or take a little more notice of the people and places around you.
  • Have a go at answering our weekly question to tell us about your local experiences for even more chances to win.

Love it. Explore it. Support it. Enjoy it. Go Local!
