  • “Making a real difference to young people’s lives”

“Making a real difference to young people’s lives”

We all know that the lives of young people can be difficult.

And they can be all the more difficult if they’re having to deal with the problems caused by poor mental health – especially if they have to face them without the support needed.

Luckily, we’ve got teams of hard-working people in place, that have been able to support young people when they’ve needed it.

And better still, they’ve won an award for their work.

    TRAC and ADTRAC

Two local projects funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) are celebrating after winning the Regional ADTRAC 16-24 Europe Day competition.

The TRAC and ADTRAC projects support young people aged 11-24 across Wrexham and Flintshire.

Participants took part in a range of fun activities on Talacre Beach followed by lunch at Holywell Youth Centre and a visit to Flint Castle.

“Project is making a real difference”

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-poverty said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in both the TRAC and ADTRAC projects across Wrexham and Flintshire for winning the regional competition.

“The event was extremely successful and all project staff and young people should be very proud to have their efforts recognised at a regional level.

“The projects are making a real difference to young people’s lives in the area and I’d like to thank everyone involved for making the event such a huge success.”

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

For some of the young people involved it was their first experience of visiting a beach and castle and the day out gave them the opportunity to enjoy some of the local sites in North East Wales.

The event gave young people involved in the projects the opportunity to enjoy a day out and have fun whilst also accessing wellbeing support from their Youth Engagement Mentors to build up their confidence and self-esteem.

Following the day, one of the young people explained that since working with his mentor his confidence has grown enormously and he can now speak openly about how he is feeling.

    “Individual Support”

Both the TRAC and ADTRAC projects are part-funded by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government, offering personalised support to young people, aged 11-24, to remove barriers and help engage in either their education or to progress into work, education or training.

Find out more about the ADTRAC project here or get in touch with the ADTRAC team for Wrexham and Flintshire at ADTRAC@wrexham.gov.uk for further details regarding the referral process for organisations as well as for self-referrals.

  • Who has helped with over 30,000 arrests?

Who has helped with over 30,000 arrests?

Our Wrexham Council CCTV team has helped police make a staggering 30,000 arrests.

The team has reached this impressive figure by operating and monitoring over 80 cameras positioned in and around Wrexham.

“It helps us to do our job”

Inspector Paul Wycherley, North Wales Police said: “Wrexham’s CCTV helps us do our job every day. We have the live feeds on our desktop computers, we are always connected and have two dedicated town centre officers and four PCSOs who are all connected to the CCTV.

“In the last few weeks alone, CCTV has helped us to locate missing people, drink drivers and make arrests after a large public disorder incident on High Street. The quality of the staff in CCTV control are what makes the real difference, they are of a very high calibre and are well equipped and well trained.”

    Helped reduce crime by 56%

Since the team was set up in 1996, it has assisted in over 30,000 arrests. And, not only has it assisted in these arrests but, since the introduction of the CCTV in the town centre together with the development of the town centre police team, crime in the first year of operation reduced by over 56%! This resulted in a national award for the team in 1999.

The partnership has grown from strength to strength with the CCTV team working in partnership with local police officers to help monitor large events, like the recent Stereophonics gig, to football matches as well as the towns night time economy.

    “Exceptionally successful”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety said, “We are lucky to have such a dedicated CCTV team based in Wrexham County Borough. It is instrumental in assisting partner organisations to make arrests and keep Wrexham streets safe. CCTV and incident response work hand in hand and have been exceptionally successful in reducing and deterring crime in the county borough.”

CCTV can help reduce the fear of crime as well as make people feel safe. They are also a great source of live information. You can follow their Twitter account (@TCCWcmCCTVWxm) for traffic updates, large events, public safety and crime prevention information.

The team, made up of seven members of staff, also monitor alarms for all council buildings and run 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Thinking of watching the world cup in Wrexham? Read this…

The World Cup 2018 is just around the corner. The first match kicks off on Thursday June 14th at 4pm.  You might be planning on heading to Wrexham to watch the football – which is fantastic!

Wrexham has a great selection of bars and clubs to watch the matches. We just want to ensure that everyone who does head into town has a safe and enjoyable time.

If you do over indulge and drink a bit too much alcohol, you could end up turning a great night into a bad one. You could end up cutting your night short, getting into trouble or getting hurt.

We are also encouraging people to cut back on how much they drink at home before going out – so-called ‘pre-loading’ or “prinking” – as well as how much they consume when visiting bars, pubs and clubs in the town.

SPOTTED A POTHOLE? REPORT IT HERE.

Plenty of people enjoy going out and having a few drinks, but if you don’t realise when it’s time to call it a night, a few drinks can become too many, your judgement can become skewed and you’re more likely to behave badly or get injured.

“Reducing the strain on public services”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “We want to encourage people to come to Wrexham and support our night time economy during the World Cup. However, we also want to remind people to think before they drink too much. It’s about reducing the strain on public services such as the police, ambulance staff and hospitals at a time when they are already under massive pressure.”

“Drink a little less and enjoy watching the football with friends”

Inspector Paul Wycherley said, “Wrexham is a great place to watch the football and we want to encourage people to have a great time watching the matches in the pubs and clubs here. The #DrinkLessEnjoyMore campaign isn’t aimed at those who drink responsibly – it’s there to help identify the minority of people who have had too much alcohol and could end up being a danger either to themselves or others.

“Drink a little less and enjoy watching the football with friends. Otherwise, you may ruin their night out too if they have to take you home early.”

Wrexham Council works in partnership with North Wales Police, Public Health Wales, the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), the Area Planning Board, Glyndwr University and Coleg Cambria to deliver the #DrinkLessEnjoyMore campaign.
