Park tennis courts in Wrexham have been officially reopened after a £14,756.66 renovation. On Monday 27th November the refurbished tennis courts at Bellevue Park hosted a ceremony attended by local representatives from Wrexham Council, UK Government and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

Through the Parks Tennis Project, the LTA is delivering the biggest ever investment in parks tennis facilities across Britain, which has been used to transform three courts at Bellevue Park, providing a significant boost to sporting facilities. Over 1,500 courts have been transformed so far as part of a £30million investment by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, which is seeing thousands of existing park tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition brought back to life for the benefit of communities across the country, providing vital opportunities for children and adults to get active.

The three Bellevue Park tennis courts have been repainted, and a new gate system fitted, which will make it easier for members of the public to find, book and get on court.

Alongside the investment, Wrexham County Borough Council are also working with the LTA to deliver a range of activity across the park sites. This will include weekly organised free park tennis sessions for all ages, playing levels, and experience, with equipment provided, meaning that people will not need someone to play with or their own racket. Local Tennis Leagues will also provide friendly, sociable, opportunities to get active through local competition. Keep an eye out on our socials for further details on these events

Park tennis courts are vital in providing opportunities for children and adults to get active, delivering significant physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits to participants. Accessible facilities in parks are particularly critical to opening up the sport to those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and women and girls.

All courts will be available to book via the LTA website. New booking systems and gate access technology means it is now easier to get on court by booking in advance to guarantee availability.

Cllr Hugh Jones Lead Member for Environment said:“Wrexham is well known for its football, but we also have one of the largest indoor and outdoor tennis facilities in the UK, (Wrexham Tennis Centre), that often plays host to international events.

“We hope that the renovation of the Bellevue park facility will allow even more members of our community to access high quality tennis facilities and get involved with the game.”

Julie Porter, Chief Operating Officer at the LTA, said:

“We are delighted to be working with Wrexham County Borough Council to improve their park tennis facilities and provide more opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and get active. This investment is part of the UK Government and LTA’s Parks Tennis Project, and will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come. We will also be working closely with Wrexham County Borough Council to ensure that the local community have a range of accessible opportunities to get on court, and open up our sport to many more people.”
